At what point does comfy become slouchy?

March 29, 2011

I read a post today over at Newlyweds Next Door and was inspired to do a similar post on my blog for teachers. You can check out her post here. Over at Newlyweds Next Door they are discussing whether or not to wear heels and ponytails to work in a corporate setting. Neither of those apply to me in any way. Teaching is a profession...but totally not corporate.

Different Schools have different dress code policies for teachers, ours is pretty relaxed. I can wear flip flops if they are cute, any kind of pants except jeans (unless it's jean day), a whole hosts of tops(as long as the girls aren't hanging out), and school spirit shirts(if they are tucked in-but no one does that). As y'all have probably see in man of my OOTW posts, I am pretty casual. I tend to wear khakis, Toms, sandals, V-neck shirts with scarfs, button downs with a belted waist, and anything remotely cute that is comfortable.

I honestly could not imagine doing the corporate job super dressed up deal every day, I might die. Now there are some things I won't do:

1. I don't wear t-shirts unless it's jean day.
2. I DO NOT show any form of cleavage.
3. I don't go to work wrinkled.
4. I don't leave for work without my hair fixed.

Now this year I have reduced the amount of makeup I wear, last year I did a full face everyday...not happening. Now I will put on concealer, blush, and some mascara. But the full blown face for a class of kids does not work for me, I wear glasses and you can barely see makeup on my eyes anyway.

But like they talked about over at Newlyweds....hair and shoes tend to make or break you. So here is my question for y'all: What shoes are appropriate for work? How much makeup is not enough? And at what point is comfortable crossing the line to slouchy?

Why I hate Oak trees, as if Spring wasn't enough of a reason.

March 28, 2011

As though it is not enough for the giant Oak tree out back to unleash hordes of pollen, hence forth turning my shoes yellow while chasing a baby around the back yard for an hour, this right here totally is a good reason to hate it.
While I swept off the back patio in hopes of the Oak tree junk not getting drug into the house by the furry members of the family, the world's dumbest strip of dachshund velcro saw fit to roll around in the mess I swept out of the doorway.

I told Laura to shake her. But it didn't work.

Next thing I knew the baby was covered in the Oak junk too.

Geeze, can't I can't a break?

Let it be known, tomorrow ole Ellard shall be shaved.

And so will Annie (my sister's large strip of doggie velcro).

And then, I will refuse to sweep until the end of spring...no matter how deep the Oak junk gets.
Not really...it will get swept up again and again.

In other news...no meat-free/man-free this week. I am on spring break at my parent's house and have zero motivation to fight the pudge and stray away from those yummy burgers, fries, and fried onions my Mom made tonight. I'll still eat pretty healthy the rest of the week, but I have no way of planning what I am eating while staying here until Wednesday and then heading down to Thibodaux Wednesday morning to Saturday. I have a feeling I will be doing a man-free/fasting post next week after my South LA stay haha.

What is your solution for allergy junk? I have tried Sudafed and Chlortrimetion for day, and it is not working. I've been taking Bendaryl at night and it work great, but I can't just sleep all day so that I can breathe. The Oak tree behind my parents house is out for blood and if I keep blowing my nose like this my raw skin will give that evil tree what it's looking for. TMI right? But misery loves its company. Give me your solutions people! I would be gargling with hot salt/red pepper water but Mother dear doesn't have any ground red pepper and this chick isn't about to risk huffing down a red pepper flake.

Just for fun, I told Joshua bye-bye today and he did this...

He walked straight over to the door and tried to leave. He might not be able to say much but the kid knows what bye-bye is.

Oh Murphy! Why do you treat me so badly?

March 26, 2011

For quite some time now I have been trying to come up with the title of a post I could do weekly. One that I started that y'all could possibly link up to, because I just love linking up to others and reading the on other blogs. So after a lot of thinking...and I mean this thought has come to mind off and on for months now. I have decided on The Saturday Seven. Every week I might answer 7 questions, link to 7 recipes I love, rant about 7 things, or tell 7 odd stories. Who knows, but there will be 7 and they will occur on Saturday.

So here is the first attempt at The Saturday 7, after the gobs of Murphy's Law chunked at me lately I feel it very necessary to make this week a post about all of those happenings....some unfortunate, but none the less I have been cracking up at it all. My sister asked me just yesterday "Can you go anywhere in public without something happening to you?" The answer is...apparently not.

Murphy's Law Edition

1. Last week I got a speeding ticket in a school zone, had it been   3 minutes later...and I had not been laughing on the phone with Laura, I would not have had the ticket. Honestly, 3 minutes to 4pm, why couldn't he just let me off the hook!
2. When I called Jeremy to tell him about the ticket he then said "By the way I got one last week coming back to Thibodaux, but I didn't say anything cause I thought you'd be mad...but since you got one..." I literally laughed out loud. I wouldn't have been mad at all, but that fact that he held off until I got a ticket and then saw it okay to out him self, only because I had one, was just hilarious. (you can't get mad if you mess up too, right?)
3. While we were on the phone discussing out stupid tickets Jer was heading to an apartment complex to look around and hopefully find us a place to live. As soon as he turned into the place a guy in a jacked up truck carrying a trailer hit him. {Because everything happens in 3's right?}
4. Well it didn't end there. I then {same day people!} went to Brookshires, I usually go to WalMart but didn't feel like crowd fighting for a potato. As I was checking out I glanced behind me, only to see the #1 ex I try to avoid at the check out behind me. When led to me having to exercise southern manners my Nanny taught me, and say hi back after I was noticed. He tried to strike up a conversation...but I headed for the hills. I was in sheer shell shock, and my never go to Brookshires again. Just my luck that nut ball has moved to the same side of town as me, luckily I know he never shops at WalMart, so WalMart it is for me.
5. I got home the other day to find one of the fabric flowers I made for out wedding that has been attached to a basket for 2 years had been destroyed by a dog. It probably took me 2-3 hours to make that one flower, and they weren't cheap material. Considering it has been sitting there for so long without Maddie touching it it is safe to assume the shedding mongrel that has recently taken up shop at my house did it. Fabric just isn't a texture Maddie eats. Only tissue, cotton, wood, or rubber.
6. Then I got home to find one flip flop sitting on the counter. I searched and searched for the partner flop, but it never surfaced. Until one of the roommates found it in the couch. It had been mauled over in a big way. I would have naturally assumed Maddie did it, and I did, until I saw the teeth marks and the fact that the thong had been chewed off in 3 places. Not the work of Maddie, she typically chews the connecter on the bottom of Old Navy flip flops then realizes what she did and runs for her life. This had huge gashes and was obviously done by a larger beast. Momma B (as my class last year decided to call me haha) don't play the chewing game, vengeance is mine!
7. This is quite the embarrassing doozie. I stopped by our friendly neighborhood slutty panty supplier at the mall on my way out of town yesterday. After roaming like someone unleashed a 12 yr old girl in there (completely embarrassed) a nice lady finally asked if I needed help. When I told her what I was looking for, and my life story, she pointed me in the right direction. {does anyone else feel the need to justify their actions when they enter that store? I told her I was married and everything short of my social security number}Then I asked for something else, and she pointed me in another direction, where all the garments were way above my head. I then stood like 12 yr old attempting to grasp at items I am apparently too short to purchase. If that weren't bad enough, when I went to check out my ex-boyfriend from 8th grade(I don't think he dates girls anymore) popped up from behind the counter and said "Hey Emily!" at the top of his lungs. I almost literally died of embarrassment.

I honestly cannot go out in public without something happening. Next time I am wearing a disguise.
How did Murphy treat y'all this week?

fill in the blank {rarely on a} Friday

www.thelittlethingswedo.blogspot.com

1.   My most prized possession is       my grandmother's rings. I have my Nanny's wedding bands and my Granny Aida's rings (that she wore all the time). I have neither of those women with me anymore, but I would like to one day give those to a daughter and tell them about those women  .

2.  If I could be one age for the rest of my life, I would want to be    I think I would stay at the present day 25. Below that was a ton of hard years, for some reason I feel grown up but still young...it works for me   .

3.  The best way to spend a weekend is    reading in my lawn chair in the backyard, dates with the hubby, catching up on the DVR   .

4.  My outlook on life is     that if you really want it, you will get it. I want to be 5lbs smaller, but it won't happen so long as peanut butter balls keep calling my name haha  .

5.  If you want to annoy me, just     ask me 30 million questions, when you ask to go to the bathroom for the 15th time after I said no, ask again. Lord help me teaching is tough...kids are tough.   .

6.  I am completely defenseless when it comes to       dessert. I have zero will power to not eat that cake or cookie. I just can not resist sugary goodness   .

7.  When dressing for the day one should       take ample care of their skin, and wear whatever makes them feel the best that day. Fat days for instance call for a cover the pudge shirt.    .

meat-free/man-free wk10

March 22, 2011

These posts just keep getting later and later. But this week has been nuts. I had Heat to Home last night, and had a blast with those ladies by the way. Then tomorrow I have Intern Seminar, we were supposed to bring food to the KDP initiation but they found out they have to use Aramark since they are having it on campus this semester. One less thing to cook. But they want us to donate money to offset the cost, sorry but this chick can't just hand out cash...I can bake you a cookie, but no cash.

Now for the menu:

Breakfast:
Healthy McMuffins yet again.
{for those that don't know-whole wheat english muffin, fat free cheese, egg, soy bacon}

Lunch:
Faux BLT (soy bacon, spinach, tomato, lavash bread)
Cracked Black Pepper Triscuits with Laughing Cow Cheese

Here is a pic of the glorious Lavash bread
One giant piece is 100 calories and you really only need half of one for a wrap.

Dinner:
Pizza with either:  corn, mozzarella, onion, chives, lime zest, and balsamic drizzle or pesto, tomato, mozzarella, goat cheese---pizza was made either with Lavash or a FlatOut
South of the Border Baked Potato with pinto beans, salsa, light sour cream, cheese and green onions

growing it out...yet again

March 19, 2011

In my entire hair life I have had the same pattern of happiness and unhappiness. I tend to grow it out super long and then on a whim cut it all off, only to regret it later.

Example 1: After high school graduation we went swimming and I had in earrings. My hair kept getting stuck in my earrings so I went the next day to chop it all off...and regret it later.

Example 2: Jeremy was gone to Africa for 3 weeks. While he was gone boredom got the best of me and I cut off my super long hair to really short and took out my belly button ring.

Now for example 3:

Right before Christmas I went to get a trim, well the girl that normally cuts my hair wasn't there and I didn't want to wait so I decided to go with my Mom later and have someone else do it. Instead of just telling her to trim the end I told her to layer it up...big mistake. My already thin hair looked like someone gave me a shag with a bush wacker. My botton layer was super thin and I was sad. So I went back the next day and had her chop it all off.

Now I am so antsy to get my hair back I am eating baby vitamins like a nut and brushing with a vibrating hair brush to stimulate it to grow back. I can't imagine what short hair will look like under my graduation cap.

Here is a photo collage I put together of the hair progression:
For the record I the initial short cut was dow on 1-23-10. It was growing out fine, but the way my bangs and layers were cut it would start to flip out, and therefore make me put it in a bobby pin like in picture 3.
The hair cut on 2-18 was done by the girl that cuts my long hair and cut it in a way that we could grow it back out easily, with the least amount of awkward. As for yesterday's pic, I like the way the front looks but I didn't realize the back was poofing like that. I blow dry it with a  round brush, maybe I should do it with a smaller brush in the back. Suggestions?

Also in both "cut" pictures the girls who did my hair had straightened the mess out of it, so you can't really tell the length as well compared to how I styled it. Needless to say I am going to get some horse shampoo today to try to make it grow faster.

What are your hair growth suggestions?

www.thelittlethingswedo.blogspot.com

1.   The best deal I've ever gotten is       my farmhouse table. I wanted to buy a solid wood one from an unfinished furniture store and my parents had someone make one for half the price, and much nicer  .

2.  If I were hosting a dinner party and could invite people from my fantasy guest list it would include    Elvis, Princess Diana, Gordon Ramsey would cook, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, The Beatles, Beth Moore(bc she just seems so fun). This is a hard question   .

3.  Something that inspires me is    other bloggers, teacher blogs and websites, and sometimes I just get so uninspired that something cool actually comes out and my class has fun anyway. Like our iLeap poster for instance(posted in project 365 tab)  .

4.  If I could only choose to eat one flavor of food for the rest of eternity (sweet, salty, spicy, bitter....) I would have to go with     hard decision, I tend to eat sweet then crave salty then crave sweet, and so on and on. But I would go with Salty  .

5.  I dream about     crazy things. I dream about work, telling off people who irritate me, and weird stuff. But twice I have dreamed someone was pregnant and they either found out they were shortly after or announced their secret two days later. One I dreamed had a boy on an airplane in Honduras, he had blonde hair and blue eyes. (now for real life and not the dream) Two days later she announced on Christmas Eve to her family in Honduras that she was pregnant. Then a few months later found out she was having a boy. When he was born he had blonde hair and blue eyes, and still does. Odd right. For the record no one knew they were trying or pregnant  .

6.  My weekend will be spent       catching up on homework, dvr, and sleep   .

7.  If I could only  watch one movie or TV show for the rest of my life, it would be      umm another hard decision. Maybe a cooking show   .

bullet points are for the brain dead{2nd edition}

  • It is a bullet point kind of day. Considering my lack of blogging this week...it is the only way.
  • For some reason this week is kicking my butt. Monday was crazy as usual, Tuesday we had a parent night and I didn't get home until after 7pm, then I had to turn right back around today and have duty. Tomorrow we are having a half day for inservice...but the bad thing is, I have my last ULM observation. It is bad because I didn't bring home any of my stuff today and can't get my lesson ready or put the junk in my Internship binder that is due for a notebook check tomorrow. Oh joy. I get to wing it like crazy. Say a little prayer for me tomrrow.
  • I have not been able to sleep to save my life. At first melatonin pills were working, now they aren't. I wake up constantly and feel like I didn't sleep at all when I get up. If you have any solution let me know. I just really don't want to take anything I'd have to see a doctor to get. I really don't like doctors.
  • I just picked out my 6th verse for SSMT. I honestly have no clue how I will keep adding verses and remembering the old ones until January. I couldn't even remember to bring home my lesson plan tonight for Pete's sake! I am bound and determined to actually memorize, even if it means I won't remember something else this year.
  • We took the tater tot to the zoo Saturday. As soon as my sister posts pics I will put them up on the blog too.
  • I gained weight while Jeremy was here. Love him to death but in one day I had KFC and Johnny's pizza. I now have to squeeze out of my doorway and into my pants.
  • I miss the hubs even though he has that affect on my waistline. I won't be seeing him for the next two weeks and will go down to Thibodeaux for a quick trip to put my application in a few places and beg for a teaching position.
  • We only have 8 1/2 weeks of school left! PTL!
  • Last but not least, I have a little giveaway I am going to be posting as soon as I have the energy to do the post that goes with it. {hint it has to do with the NELA technology fair I went to this month}

March 13, 2011

Let's call this the I am trying to get rid of food edition. As you will see there is nothing interesting going on. I promise next week I am actually cooking. And I am pulling out an old vegetarian recipe I use to make.

Breakfast:
whole wheat english muffin w/ egg, soy bacon, and fat free cheese
{Tom's english muffins are really good, skip the Nature's Own, they taste like junk}

Snacks:
apple w/ peanut butter
cheese and crackers

Lunch:
Honey Bunches of Oats w/ Almond Milk

Dinner:
Leftover soup I froze two weeks ago

Now for the late night "I just have to have something sweet" snack-sugar free jello. Yes I know some people can't stand the stuff, but I love it.
...............
By the way, last weeks enchiladas and salad with tomatillo dressing were divine! I had some goat cheese laying around and added it in and it gave them a great flavor.

FITBF-on a Saturday...again

March 12, 2011

www.thelittlethingswedo.blogspot.com

{a happy little photographic accident}

1.   My biggest accomplishment in life thus far is       being 1 observation from graduation in May. I never ever thought I'd get a Master's degree. Heck most of my stuck on themselves high school class joked that I wouldn't graduate college, soley because I didn't graduate with honors in HS. But honestly I could have cared less about HS.  .

2.  My favorite place to sit in my house is    in my big blue chair. But I want to get another big chair. Actually, I'm just ready to move   .

3.  My fashion philosophy is    wear what looks good on me for my body type. The trends lately aren't something that would look good on me. I'll stick to my ruffles and classic look{when I'm not in jeans}. The shoes now are cute...but they will be out before I get a chance to wear them, I'm a teacher, you can't wear that mess to work    .

4.  Something every girl should have is     a piece of jewelry that actually means something to her .

5.  If you looked in my purse right now you'd find....     floss, nail file, check book, planner, lip gloss, bobby pins, paper soap, allergy medicine, Sam's card, Johnny's Pizza 1/2 off teacher card, debit card, reciepts, and my phone   .

6.  My favorite music right now is       oddly enough, classical. It calms down kids, and I am a lover of silence so  it works wonders. Other than that I have been listening to Zumba music when I walk the dogs or the new Hillsong CD.   .

7.  My favorite part of my body is       my legs, doesn't take much working out for them to look muscular. Which reminds me, when my husband goes back to school I have to quit being lazy. This week has been so so lazy   .
