The Kris Jenner Guacamole

May 29, 2022

File this under things I make and have yet to share... not to mention I just admitted to my eye rolling husband where I got the recipe from.

You read it correct. This is a long buried internet secret and I can't remember how I came across it. But the guac recipe from Kris Jenner's book (that came out in the early 2000's) is a favorite at our house.

I've cut the recipe in half, the original serves 20, and omitted the olives... Jeremy isn't an olive fan. So add them back in if you feel compelled.

The Kris Jenner Guacamole

Serves 10
Ingredients:
4 ripe avocados
1/2 cup Original Pace Picante Sauce
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp onion powder
seasoned salt & pepper

1/2 lemon
3/4 cup sour cream
3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar
2 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped
4 green onions

Directions:
In a large bowl, using a potato masher, mash the avocados. Stir in the salsa, garlic salt, and onion powder. Season with seasoned salt and pepper.

Level out the guacamole with a rubber spatula and squeeze the lemon on top. Spread the sour cream evenly on top. Sprinkle over the cheddar cheese. If you want to use olives, sprinkle them around the perimeter, then a band of roma tomatoes, and finally the chopped green onions in the center like a bullseye effect.

Serve chilled with tortilla chips.

Beauty Favorites May 2022

May 24, 2022

It's been a few years since I updated my beauty favorites.

Today I'm sharing a few items I reorder again and again, and a couple of new favorite items. Some dupes, some not.

Before Covid shut everything down I had been trying new products pretty frequently, but after two years of wearing a mask... makeup had taken a backseat. There was just no point at all in most products unless they were for your eyes.

I half forgot about items I liked, and half stopped caring.

Now, after months of being mask-less I've dug out a few old items and discovered a couple new. (Mainly because old favorites were discontinued.)

1. Almay Lip Vibes - Worry Less

This is supposed to be an affordable dupe for Charolette Tilbury Pillow Talk. My only issue is that the lip liner I was using ran out, and is discontinued. I ordered another lip liner that is supposed to be a good dupe (Rimmel Easy End Snob) and it's an awful dupe. Far too pink. So I'm still on the lookout for a great liner to go with this, if only Almay would make liners for each of their colors.

I really love this Lip Vibes color, but because finding a liner has been a chore there is a slight chance I'll splurge on the actual lip kit from Charolette Tilbury.

2. La Roche-Posey with Toleriane

I saw a dermatologist talk about this moisturizer on Youtube last year and have been hooked. I often use RetinA and harsh products on my face, which leads to it being very sensitive. I tend to get redness and at times even my beloved CeraVe burns.

When I'm at the height of RetinA burn, this stops it. Zero burn, zero redness. Will be reordering very soon.

3. Tarte Shape Tape

Why has it taken me so long to break down and buy this product?! For years I've used two different kinds of concealer at the same times to conceal the dark circles I fight, this singular product has put me down to one.

My only advice is to use a moisturizer type primer or eye cream right before applying so it goes on smoother, blot out with your fingers, the use a wet beauty blender to blend in and smooth it out.

4. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream Illumination

This has been a ride or die product for about 6 years. The illumination makes you look glowy, but not wet and fake. The big bonus is the 50spf and anti-aging ingredients. The packaging has changed, it seems smaller, but hopefully the pump will hold out for the entire use of the product.

5. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer (Soft Brown)

I've tried soft brown as well as taupe and find the soft brown just goes with my hair color better.

The thicker triangular shape of the pencil makes for filling your brows so much easier than their original pencil. I go over this with Elf Cosmetics Wow Brow and then a clear gel to set. The first two products really get to job done of making my brows not look so Millennial who plucked her eye brows nearly off in high school and is suffering now as a mid-30's person.

6. Mineral Fusion Brush On Sun Defense

Blame it on Korean and Asian beauty influencers, they always have the best anti-aging products, but I ordered this dupe. Colorescience brush on sunscreen is $69 dollars and there was just no way on earth I was paying that.

But I wanted a brush on sunscreen that I could reapply throughout the day - no white cast - and could go on over my makeup.

This is it people. Plus it's only $14!

Kindergarten Graduation

May 18, 2022

Last night Harrison got to celebrate the end of school with Kindergarten Graduation.

I'll be honest, I'm not that sappy mother who gets teary because, well, life has to move on. We also are completing his "victory lap" as one of my teacher buddies at our school in Hoover called it. Y'all, doing what was best for him and repeating K was rough on a child of the 90s who was brought up in a time where that had a ton of stigma.

But it's been best for him, with his speech delay and expressive language that we have worked so hard on - reading doesn't come easy for his little brain. He's so intelligent, but reading is hard (heck I remember how hard it was for me.)

He's done so well, and learned so much over the years. Maybe after we see the developmental pediatrician over the summer I'll share a bit more. (crossing my fingers they get us in during the summer)

This is Harry and his best friend. Like BEST friend. These two hug and carry on each time they see each other. When we were leaving last night I was cracking up because - we had parked a space away from each other - but they were both putting their hands around their mouths to yell. Like they couldn't hear each other. And were talking something about ice cream flavors.

I haven't the slightest clue why little boys are so quirky, but they're adorable.

Another thing that made me laugh last night was that at the end of every song people would clap, and I don't think Harrison expected it. He would smile so big and then (be the only child to do so) take a bow.

I haven't started going gray yet, but this child is going to be the reason why.

He is the most preacher's kid child. (insert eye roll) Last night he came in and walked right on stage, as if he owned the place. Sometimes I wish my children weren't so familiar with church, they act like it's a second home and hold nothing back.

He then removed his shoes and continued to carry around his bucket of popcorn. Jeremy had to get up to check the AC and off Elliot went. He didn't like that his Harry was gone, and wasn't about to let Daddy go off without him either.

This particular picture was taken when he announced, "You can take my picture too! I say cheese."

Let it be known he is busier than any busy bag I will ever create for him.

Some of Harry's favorite people came last night - we just forgot to get a picture with Brandon and Kali (and I should say Mia because Harrison was about to propose marriage after Kali let her hand him a graduation present... of Pokemon cards.)

This is Naomi, we use to be next door neighbors. Harrison has loved her and her husband since he was old enough to walk across the street and demand a spoon full of peanut butter. Seriously, we never got home that he didn't look for their cars and then take off to their house with us trailing behind him.

We surely don't deserve it, but God has placed amazing neighbors next to us time and time again.

Last up, us... minus Elliot who was having none of it.

Hopefully we will get the professional photos in soon and I'll share those as well.

FIVE Old Navy Dresses I'm Loving Right Now

May 17, 2022

With the summer heat in full swing, I tend to lean towards dresses.

Louisiana is hot, and peeling skinny jeans off your body at the end of the day is less than thrilling. Shorts work for after work and weekends... but church and school still require real clothing for the months of May - then August to October.

After the thrilling Laura Ashley craze of winter, I've grown fond of it in a sense and am leaning into that look for summer as well. I won't lie, I'm a touch sad I didn't get any collared dresses back in the winter.

With May sales happening at Old Navy, Mother's Day was a treat, it is high time to jump on it and forgo anything that clings to your legs for the next several months.

Memorial Day is coming up - so keep checking their app for big discounts.

And before I link to all of these dresses let me tell you my two criteria for a cute dress these days. First, I have to be able to wear biker shorts underneath. Elliot is ALWAYS lifting my dresses up, and I can't risk offering a peep show after church. Second, I have to be able to wear an actual bra with it. At this age, after nursing two children, a full blown real bra has to be in place.

Let me add a third one on before I link the dresses, I also want a decently high neckline. The older I get, the more coverage I appreciate.

1. Tiered Chambray Puff Sleeve All Day Midi Swing Dress

I bought this same dress but in blue gingham and can't find it on their website to save my life. Also, anything with "swing" in the title means you will be easy breezy during the scorching summer months.

2. Puff Sleeve Printed Sleeve Dress

This comes in several colors and might be my favorite of five. It's got arm coverage, leg coverage, and the dangling strings that allow you to tie this puppy up if you risk your toddler digging in the top of your dress. Plus it's super cute.

3. Fit & Flare Flutter Sleeve Tie-Back Midi Dress

This one is mom bra risky, but worth wearing one with straps. Plus it's long enough to not flash anyone and chambray might be my favorite material to date.

4. Flutter-Sleeve Smocked Floral Embroidered Mini Swing Dress

This dress also comes in pink and a blue chambray color. Conservative, cute, perfect for the hot months ahead. The embroidery detail makes it look better quality rather than a plain print dress.

5. Stripped Button Front All Day Midi Swing Dress

I'm in a full blown "what can I wear clogs with" phase and this dress is perfect for clogs. Wear it to work now and even into the fall season. The blue hue makes me much more versatile for spring through fall.

Meal Planning Monday

May 16, 2022

Y'all know I start on Thursday - so here we go.

Also, I had to bring myself to actually meal prep for work this week. I've been making chicken in the instant pot and just bringing that with rice... I can no longer eat such simple food. It just really isn't me. I need things that taste good.

Thursday | Easy Skillet Chicken Tinga Enchiladas

Friday |   Pizza (Jeremy was at a graduation)

Saturday | Sunday School Class Game Night - we had Caribbean Pulled Pork Tacos and I have got to figure out how they were made.

It was pulled pork and white corn tortillas with cilantro, sour cream (made more like Crema), red onions (but they seemed like they had been pickled or such... but they weren't vinegary. Like I said I've got to pick the brain of the person who cooked.), jalapenos, salsa, guacamole, and a cole slaw that had pineapple in it. There's a ton to unpack from that meal lol!

Sunday | Raising Cane's Fundraiser for the youth group and dinner turned into Pickle Cookies. Hear me out on this one - it was full fledge things I did as a kid but recently rediscovered on Instagram Reels. Ritz topped with sliced pickles, cheddar cheese, and then put under the broiler for a hot second to melt. Strange, but so good. And no, no one else ate them.

Monday | Cobb Salad

Tuesday | Bacon Cheeseburger Skillet with a chopped salad (nothing pretty but it works for a low carb day)

Wednesday | Sam's Chick-fil-a knock off nuggets and fries (the kids fav and my fav on single mom night)

Lunch - I grilled bell peppers, red onion, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and pineapple - seasoned with Tony's and some bbq sauce. Then I seperately grilled chicken thighs with greek seasoning and lemon juice. These were intended to be kabobs but I did not have the desire to kabob anything last night.

Baby Ducks and Awards Day

May 13, 2022

The victory lap of Kindergarten has nearly ended, Harrison had his awards program yesterday. The only event left looming is kindergarten graduation.

I need to check this child's height from last year to now, he seems to have doubled his leg length. There was definitely some sort of growth spurt over the winter, pants that I've had for two years that were always too big were suddenly too small.

Anyway, Awards Day, he got the award for kindness.

Elliot has determined that his award is his. He found it, at his house none the less. He can't read or he would know that stealing a kindness award does not demonstrate kindness.

The biggest highlight for this child though, was when he got to cuddle ducks on Wednesday night. Especially the little one who really was into cuddling.

In case you're wondering, he now wants a duck.

Elliot, on the other hand, is a firm believer that indoor animals are unnatural. He's accepted Dill has 2 years of being terrified of stuff animals and taxidermy.

Side note: he was freaked out by the taxidermy at the cabin in Dry Creek (so was his buddy Dill).

Here, in this photo, you'll notice Elliot is trying to kick a duck. Not a hard kick, but a very "three year old who was mad at a duck" for flipping it's water over... then Elliot sat in it... and got his bottom wet... so he was retaliating.

....................................................

In other Elliot news, I swear I'll forget all these things simply because too many things happen in a 24 hours period...

...We were stuck in traffic yesterday (road work), Elliot became so incensed that the trip was taking too long and he wanted to go home that he began demanding I unbuckle him because he was going to walk home.

He continued this demand for 30 minutes.

I also tried to bribe him into pooping in the potty with a snowball, but he said he preferred a king cake. I realize this potty bribery is going to get expensive, but with the extent of his stubbornness, I'm willing to accept it.

Mother's Day 2022

May 12, 2022

As someone who rarely loves a surprise, I don't know why up until this year I have left this holiday to be determined by my house full of boys.

I don't generally want a lot, just a relaxed day at the house, an easy lunch, and to check something off my to-do list. (yes I generally save wish list items for holidays)

I did quite a few things that made this day last, essentially, a weekend.

Friday we headed to Home Depot to gather 12 terra cotta pots, while Jeremy was off at an event. Saturday, again Jeremy was at an event, I planted my cut flower seeds in their cute little pots while the boys played. That evening we went to dinner and essentially did as little as possible during the day. Sunday we went to church, ate at Raising Cane's, hunted down a kiddie pool, ran by Lowe's, picked up snowballs and then little else the rest of the afternoon.

The boys played in the pool and on the trampoline, and sprayed everyone with water guns.

Here's my pot setup. I bought 10 9 inch pots and the two larger ones at the top are 12 inch. I also grabbed two smaller pots to throw herbs in (sweet mint and lavender).

Below are the flower varieties I am attempting to grow. I'll say attempting until they actually grow and bloom.

Top left to right: Stock Katz Fragrant, Queen Anne's Lace

Bottom left to right: Zinnia State Fair Mix, Gomphrena, Craspedia

From top to bottom, the sides mirror each other I have: (top step) Stock & Craspedia, (next down) Zinnia, Gomphrena, (bottom) Queen Anne's Lace (outside) and Zinnia.

Next year I might try tulips.

Intending to Strawberry Pick in Dry Creek

May 10, 2022

The last weekend in April we spent the weekend in Dry Creek, at the pastor's cabin on the Dry Creek Camp campus.

Y'all it was nice. Not like Hilton nice, but like youth pastor's family who needed a break from the normal nice. The cabin was lovely and the kids enjoyed everything we did that weekend.

I wanted us to go strawberry picking at CM Farm and what we ended up doing was every activity except for strawberry picking.

The boys played until Elliot was being such a tired 3 year old that he couldn't control himself anymore, and we went home.

My photos are all mixed together, but we got to go fishing and play in the sand. Harrison has been fishing a few times before in ponds, but this was his first time to catch one.

Take a wild guess at which child was terrified at horses and ended up having fun. If you guess Elliot you are correct, he and the pup were equally terrified of the mounted deer head in the cabin.

There is no prospect for this kid becoming a vet one day.

Elliot in the "snow" that he kept arguing with me about until he threw it in the air and got a taste of it. Last winter it actually snowed in Alabama, and he has never seen sand before, so this is entirely our fault for not exposing him to the dangers of sand.

But now he has been, and from here on out he will likely stay away from eating the stuff while telling hi mother she doesn't know anything about anything.

What could be more 3 year old than insisting that sand is snow, your mother is ignorant about types of snow, eating some, and then requesting that the ignorant mother get the "snow" out of your mouth while you spit and sputter?

There's that first fish I was talking about.

It was a keeper and we all ate dinner off this catch.

Until next time.

I'm crossing my fingers that we can stay in the cabin during the youth group Winter Retreat and not feel cooped up at our house for yet another year of Winter Retreat.

Where are Home Décor Trends Headed in 2022?

May 7, 2022

It’s a new year, and that makes it a great time to freshen up your home. Heading into the next 12 months with a fresh outlook is on the priority list for many people, after the Covid-19 pandemic took a huge toll on the enjoyment anyone could take from the previous two years.

Taking a look at your home décor and evaluating where you may want to make changes is not only a chance to reset and refresh your living space, but also a fun and creative activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

If you’ve never taken much of an interest in your home décor before, you’ll discover that it’s a great way to express yourself and project how you feel about the world on to the space around you, helping to establish a deeper connection with your home and satisfaction with your living environment.

Just to make the deal sweeter, it’s a fulfilling hobby in its own right. Read on to find out more about the fashionable home décor styles in 2022.

Curved furniture

According to all predictions, curved furniture is going to have a bumper year in 2022. For most households, especially those that are lean on space, having square furniture is a way to maximize the space available in the building, with fixtures hugging the walls to open up the distinct areas of the home as much as possible.

However, with modern design and manufacturing capabilities continuing to improve year on year, it has become much more viable to create furniture with curves in a time that’s profitable.

There are notable benefits to curved furniture—curved designs step away from the minimalist, standard nature of square furniture and add expression into the home, while the softer, sculpted tones evoke feelings of relaxation, and redefine the spaces we are used to.

Vintage and Upcycling

With so many products manufactured every day, there is a huge amount of second-hand, vintage, or upcycling shopping that can be done to reduce both costs and carbon footprint, as well as have fun in the meantime.

The climate is on everyone’s conscience, and reducing the products we use helps to avoid pollution and discourage large-scale production, which is a huge factor.

Whether you’re looking to build new desktop workstations, dining tables, or a chest of drawers, all of these items and their respective materials can be found online and in second-hand stores everywhere.

Taking inspiration from nature

During the Covid-19 pandemic, almost everyone was stuck inside for a considerable amount of time—and with all but a few essential services closed, people had to make use of nature and the natural world in order to pass the time and stay sane.

It’s understandable, then, that in 2022 people now want to bring the essence of nature and greenery into their homes—especially as many found new connections with nature, and discovered the stress-relieving properties and beauty of being immersed in the natural world.

Plants have always been a welcome addition to many homes, but earthy tones, natural shapes, and bringing the outdoors indoors are accompanying them this time.

Life During Spring Break

May 6, 2022

I'm a touch behind on what has been going on in life lately.

Let's see if I can't catch up.

The weekend after Easter we headed out to sprinkle Dad's ashes where his parents and grandparents are buried.

It didn't even occur to me until I saw this phot that Granny would have been 100 this year. I never met my grandfather (he died in a car accident when my father was 6 months old), but I have always wished Jeremy could have met Granny Aida. I feel like hearing her spunky nonsense would have explained a lot about how Dad and subsequently my sister and I behave.

Humor has always been of top importance in our family. She always had some quip to say, whether she wanted it to be taken as funny or a jab... that was your decision.

The weather was absolutely, in no way at all, conducive for spreading ashes. The wind wasn't just blowing, it was blowing in circles.

So we filled a few odd holes in with Dad.

Go figure, he would have laughed about it.

The wind also knocked my phone over at the exact moment the timer had counted down to take a photo of us, no less than 5 times.

The week of Easter was also Spring Break week for us. We walked to the park, cleaned the house, and piddled around doing all the things we never get to do on a busy regular week.

My grandmother called these pink buttercups when I was growing up, but I'm also seeing them called pink ladies. Either way, you know spring in Louisiana has hit when these pretty wildflowers are blooming.

This creature.

I was really planning on taking Dill camping with us, but after our trip to Dry Creek (I'll post on this later) I think the deranged puppy will be having a grandma camp week. He hasn't gotten "great" at a leash, and the park stresses his out big time. Mainly, the kids not being right on top of him, and him being on a leash causing him to not be right on top of them.

This wild cockapoo acts like they're running away and no one is watching them.

He swaps between parenting the kids an acting like a third child.

For example, he watches Elliot everywhere he goes, and Elliot also tattled on him this morning for "pushing." However you work out that the dog pushed Elliot, go ahead.

When Dad passed away on my birthday week a good friend gifted me a paint over portrait from Laura W. Taylor out of Baton Rouge. I wanted to send in a photo with me, but the one that I liked the most was really Dad, being Dad, in the backyard showing one of the kids a critter. (That was life when I was a kid. Jeans, a white undershirt, and Dad gardening and tending to animals.)

This was last summer, Dad's ducks had decided to sit on eggs for a change and we were seeing what would happen.

What ended up happening was that I noticed a duckling, Dad grabbed it, we played with the baby in the yard for about 30 minutes... made the mistake of putting it back with the dumb ducks to see what they would do. They stepped on it and killed it within an hour.

Motherly they were not.

But it was fun while it lasted and I got a great picture out of the ordeal.

Giving ducks the benefit of the doubt, rabbits are also awful mothers on their first litter.

What's a blog post without Elliot content?

Every morning, I think entirely on purpose with some alarm clock I'm not aware of, Elliot comes marching into the bathroom at 6:30am while I am getting ready for work.

He's recently discovered the magnified side of my makeup mirror and loves to examine "big Elliot."

In case you were wondering, Elliot has still given up naps.

What he hasn't given up on are what I call "Daddy Naps" where you just randomly pass out of weird times of the afternoon.

This particular "Daddy Nap" is brought to you by turning on the water outside, making a mud puddle, and inviting the dog to join in with your escapades. He wasn't happy and being unhappy leads to exhaustion.

I' fairly certain the effort put into toddler unhappiness is of the highest level of energy usage.

Our biggest boy is graduating Kindergarten this year after our "victory lap" year. Holding him back was a good decision, he's had time to mature and develop skills that he struggles with. I can't name a single mother who thought about holding their child back that I've talked to who regretted it. At least at the K level. Boys just need more time.

But instead of jumping down that rabbit hole, just enjoy this photo of him actually smiling in a photo and not making some wild face.

Meal Planning Thursday

May 5, 2022

Mother's Day weekend can only mean one thing, watch me not cook for anyone. Granted Sunday I will make a Half Baked Harvest recipe - but one of those meals that day won't be prepared by me.

Thursday | Chicken Divan

Friday |   Eating Out (Jeremy has something so the kids and I are running the roads)

Saturday | eating out

Sunday | Easy Skillet Chicken Tinga Enchiladas

Monday | Mississippi Roast with Rice & Carrots

Tuesday | leftover

Wednesday | Sam's Chick-fil-a knock off nuggets and fries (the kids fav and my fav on single mom night)

Lunch - I've gotten LAZY with school ending. It's literally a premeasured bag of frozen chicken that I made in the instant pot, rice or some carb, and some sort of sauce (bbq) on top to survive the end of the year and my decision fatigue.

Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box || May 2022

May 2, 2022

This month's Simply Earth recipe box is all about supporting women's wellness.

If you're still on the hunt for a Mother's Day Gift... look no further.

As we dive into this box today, notice the pretty color schemes. Simply Earth always does such a great job with seasonal colors and box color themes. Everything is always so pretty to look at, I even keep oils on my window seal that I frequently use.

This month's oils include:

Spearmint :: uplifting, aids digestion, pregnancy and kid safe ages 2+

Lemon :: energizes, cleans, stimulates, pregnancy, kid safe ages 2+, and dog safe

Marjoram :: warms, calms, soothes, kid safe 2+, pregnancy, dog, & cat safe

Ladies' Choice (blend) :: soothing, pregnancy, dog, and kid safe ages 2+

Extras for the women's health box include a "homemade" paperboard tube (just like in the January box, mine has held up so well), aloe vera, and a PET plastic spray bottle.

Check out those recipes!

Y'all know I love a diffuser blend, and this is a great way to mix up the scent in my home safely (no allergy issues) and with my every changing mood.

The next recipe on my first try list (okay maybe a top three list) is the Flow Roll-On. Something about life after babies makes that FLOW a lot more annoying, I can't wait to see how the Ladies' Choice oil helps to aid in comfort during that time.

Last but not least on my first three recipes I'm making is the Beauty Skin Care Balm. I love a balm, and a balm that smells amazing that doesn't irritate my allergies is even better.

What I love the most about this month's box is the variety it offers. Every month I get another oil to replace one I've previously used up, an oil or two that are new to me, and a blend that makes me beyond happy. I love how they are always introducing new blends in the boxes. Some months you might even see a repeat from a previous year (usually a blend that was a dearly loved and you're happy to see a replacement). I think Candy Cane repeated this Christmas, if I'm remembering right.

A few things before I wrap this up -

This month's 13% to end human trafficking is going to the organization 5-Stones in Wisconsin! 5-Stones action plan is to invest in communities by increasing awareness, decreasing the demand for commercial sex, preventing victimization, and networking with other organizations fighting against human trafficking.

As always head over to Simply Earth to order your APRIL box and use the code LABRIDEFREE to get a $40 giftcard/credit towards your next order when you get your Bonus Box!

Next month's box will contain Timber, Orange, Citronella, and Ho Wood. (Something tells me I'll be taking this box on our camping trip.)

Also -- here are a few things you can do with your box every month!

1. Add items to your box to get free shipping.
2. Exchange oils.
3. Gift a month to a friend.
4. Get 50% off your next box by sharing your unique voucher code with friends, they'll also get $10 off their first 5 months -  you'll get 50% off for every friend that subscribes!
