Tales from a Teacher

November 7, 2013

Oh hi! Have a seat in the back.

Oh crap where's my PowerPoint? Seriously? Why didn't I download it sooner?

Okay everyone, take out yesterday's handouts... or at least pretend you have them... and grab a thesaurus.

Not long after two observers... 2 observers, one from the state mind you, came waltzing into my crammed freezing cold classroom chock full of students who were mid argument over some drama that happened in P.E ... another one came in too.

Then I got word that more observers were down the hall.

And this one kid is sitting in the front of my class hitting his pencil as hard as he could into the top of an at least 25 year old faux wood top, with his jacket over his head. But not in the I'm sleeping fashion... more of the Michael Jackson's Blanket drama in France jacket placement.

While my run of the mill temper tantrum is taking place front-and-center, from a kid who preformed amazingly the day before, I sneak over during a timed "sharing with your partner" part of the lesson and through gritted teeth give him the biggest teacher death threat I'm legally aloud to whisper.

It basically went somewhere along the lines of "You'll have more conduct marks than you can count if you don't get it together right now. Don't you see that woman back there?!"

Let's back track to how this roller-coaster really took off...

Remember how I mentioned I had a hoard of grumpy short people nearly stabbing, poking, slapping, tripping, and tattling their way into my door after their P.E. time that apparently resembled some Jerry Springer debacle?

Well after that they have another "planning period" where I can sit in the back and make Power Points in "peace" while another teacher teaches them things they aren't listening to.

I also like to dub this time "Can you sharpen my pencil, but I didn't bring one so I need one of yours" time.

After I was left alone long enough to take roll I did, apparently out loud and no one was listening... which made me look crazy and caused the interventionist to ask if I was talking to anyone.

Nope just little ole me, taking roll in the back. Later on I learned by taking roll without my glasses on is never a good idea.

Towards the end of the morning bickering event I quickly darted out of the room to get a potty break... because teachers are supposed to hold their bladder like camels hold water.

Well, I attempted to dart.

Dart I did not.

I walked outside of my already opened door to find -  the kid who would later reenact the Michael Jackson blanket episode.

Just standing there.

Without permission.

Outside the room.

Where he shouldn't be.

After talking him off the proverbial cliff that is the wall outside my room (where the angry ones always seem to stand hitting the concrete brick wall like they can win) I found out he was mad because a girl slapped his neck in P.E.

Yeah, the girl in the back of the room who might as well be on Pluto. Who's sitting next to the boy who's sitting under his desk, whom no matter what I say or do still seems to dwell under his desk.

But I digress...

Back to the main lesson and it's never ending stream of issues.

The observers finally left. With no remarks of good or bad, one smiling, the other not.

Finally able to breathe, and to finally realize I'd taught an entire lesson in the dark (from having the light off earlier so the kids could see the bell ringer on the SmartBoard better), I'd survived yet another episode of the crazies.

Looking around the room of sheer nutty actions I came to realize something. I was living every single Way-Side School book I've ever read to a class of kids. I was however, just a possessed stuffed half dead teddy bear with one bunny ear and claws with a macabre look short of the Zombiekins book.

This is my life people.

Every crazy hilarious ounce of it. There isn't a moment that goes by that I don't stop and wonder how the mess a Psychology Major managed to get sucked into an Education Master's program and lives to blog the tale.

31 Days of Frugal Paleo | Chicken Fingers with Cauliflower Poppers

October 16, 2013

Sometimes I just need to be honest, like right now, this is going to be real honest.

Teaching is sucking the life out of me right now.

With Compass looming over ever teacher in the state's heads, heightened behavior problems due to where I'm at now, and just being at the defeated part of hitting the 5 year mark.... I'm mentally done.

I don't talk about my job much on here and for good reason, I'm not one of those "teacher" teachers. I don't live and breathe it. Seriously I chose the career because I could get a Master's in it before Jeremy started his specialist.

Now after two major moves, 4 schools, and a curriculum overhaul I'm exhausted.

I'm sick of being the "new" teacher. Teachers who have taught less time than I have tell me, "Oh you're just having to deal with this because you're new." Well, yes, I may be new here, but I'm not new.

Nearly ever year has felt like my first year of teaching simply because we've moved, or I've been transferred because of district shutdowns and the new ones were moved around.

I just want to be in a room that "my room" and have students that don't give me a run for my money because I'm new. I had really hoped that after moving I would get settled and want to stay where I am, but I can't really imagine it at the moment. Hopefully that will change before the end of the year, but as for now I am at the end of my rope and am totally out of ideas.

It just seems to be "one of those years."

Now that I got that off my chest, I just really needed to be transparent about something I'm struggling with right now. If y'all think to pray for me this school year I'd so covet your prayers. It's just tough.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Now for the actual 31 Days.

Today's recipes are a favorite and I cook them probably every other week. Since there is nothing I change in them I'm just giving you the pin so you can check them out yourself.

I normally make my own almond meal/flour, it's cheaper and much easier.

You may want to make Paleo ketchup to go with this, I adore ketchup on these poppers. Jeremy thinks I'm gross, but it's so good.

The Men in White Coats Will Be Visiting Soon.

August 14, 2012

For many teachers, school has already started.

Sadly for many teachers, school as already started.

Don't get me wrong, I love teaching (which for some reason when typing I always put teachering first and have to change it, brain fry?). But the first few weeks, maybe 2 months of school are horrendous.

New schedule. New students. Teaching your routine to a new group of people. Mounds of paper work. New state mandates. New district mandates. New, new, new.

To an extent I like change. Somethings need changing.

But I am a creature of habit. I like lists, schedules, planners. I nearly spaz if I don't know what the "plan" for the day is. I live by an agenda.

You can even take one planner from me, I have multiple one that I keep up. It's obsessive.

All that to say, I feel like I've hit a wall. I have no energy what so ever. I want so badly to workout, but can't find it in me to do it. My whole body hurts, and I can barely sleep at night. I know it is all new school year stress, but goodness it has to end soon.

All of the new Louisiana Teacher Reform things are totally blowing my mind, even though I was at a school that piloted them last year and they weren't so awful. It is just something extra. What happened to just teaching? I feel like only a small percent of my brain is allotted to teaching. I have to be worried about covering my own butt so that I can actually teach. I am not against accountability, but woah it is like a convoluted RTI teir for teachers. When do I get my IEP? I really feel like I am in need of minutes right about now.

The only thing I really worry about is getting sick, I always get sick when I am overly exhausted. It wouldn't matter if I was willing to take off work, but I hate playing catch-up. So I tend to go just to keep from dealing with the aftermath of a sub. Which essentially means I have to have enough "me" centered down time to not feel that way. Just because I am not at work doesn't mean my mind is resting. I seriously have to read something or watch mindless tv shows to get away from the teacher brain.

So to break all of this I am going walking this afternoon and listening to podcasts no matter how I currently feel...which isn't so hot. I will email the people I need to an check a few more things off my school to-do list. If only a laminater would appear in my living room I could get everything done ha!

Has this made any sense?

Good thing I'm not a drinker or a pill popper, I'd have a real problem then. Blue Bell ice cream and peanut butter is my only self soothing issue these days. But you don't see exhausted teachers hanging out at ice cream shops much do you ha!

Maybe I'll just open an ice cream shop and gear it towards teachers. I'll have flavors like Rocky Road but call them "LEAP Test Prep Week". Or Neapolitan and call it "The Inclusive Classroom". Maybe I could just mix up all of flavors and call it "Because I Said So."

Oh teaching how I can love and hate you so much at the same time.

Ugh!

So teacher people, and everyone in between. If you could name an ice cream flavor after your job situation what would you call it?

If You Give a Dachshund a Watermelon Rind...

May 10, 2012

It is safe to say the last month of school is kicking my butt. I've become quite the pathetic blogger...and nearly as absent in real life. No joke, even with a full night sleep I came home exhausted and ready to take a nap today. But then again that is what you get when classroom behavior worsens with the anticipation of summer break.

7 days of kids left!
1 teacher records day!

And then sadly....one full day off before I delve into a two day summer school training. I don't technically get off this year until July 2. Boo. But with a hubby in graduate school it is well worth saving any extra penny we can, there is a chance he could get an unpaid externship and that would be no fun at all.

Funny story though before I run off to workout and attempt to make my Fitbit step goal.

I was cutting up a watermelon and munching on a piece over the sink yesterday when Maddie starting barking at me. This dog never barks, I am not so sure she knows how. I realized she was wanting my watermelon, so I took the rind with a bit a pink left on it for her outside. She was in heaven! So much so that when I came back inside to get the chicken to grill I heard growling outside, and not the usual play growl but a very stern serious growl. As I opened the door Maddie was holding the watermelon rind in her mouth like a big smile and had all the hair on her body standing on end. She immediately tried to run inside with her leaky rind and I shoved her back out. Of course I gave Ellie her own, but who on earth as ever seen a dog want watermelon! When I finally got out the door with the chicken Maddie was scraping the meat off with her teeth and Ellie was in heaven with a beard full of watermelon juice. Here is evidence of my two clowns eating their fruit.

After Maddie finished her rind off she wanted another one, so I gave it to her...but Ellie
stole it.

Tomorrow we plan to go to a concert, one of my favorite bands Meriwether is having a release party for their newest album. Yay, we haven't been to a concert together in well over a year. I am starting to feel like some fuddy dud couple. We sold our motorcycle and we don't go to concerts. To top it off I don't even have my sports car anymore. We both drive dull adult cars, might as well pay some bills and be in bed by 7.

I will definitely need the cars paid off and another motorcycle bought...as well as a few more concerts attended before venturing into children. You can attach a baby carrier to a sissy bar, can't you?

Well now I seriously have to go workout, Teacher Appreciation week is turning into "Help Your Teacher Gain Another 5" week. I had donuts yesterday and 2 slices of cheesecake today. My rational is that it is self medicating since I don't have a drug problem.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all my teacher friends!

Interesting...

February 3, 2011

As I have said a zillion times I am in the midst of my internship for my M.A.T program. Well today I had my 6th of 8 observations to date. This one was by far the most interesting.

To start I have an assignment due which involves me video taping myself and critiquing it. So since I had already gotten a lesson together for my supervisor I decided to teach it to my homeroom before we changed  classes and I had to actually teach it in front of her. Kill two birds with one lesson plan right?

Well my plan was constantly messed with. During the taping of Report Resources Lesson 1, or as I should have called it "Stop answering me with Google it!",  I was interrupted at least 5 times. Once I told the person I was taping and I'd send the kid to her later. She said okay and would wait in the hall. I totally forgot to mention the "no go away" part and five seconds later she stuck her head back in. I then forgot who she wanted and had to ask the kids who I nominated for Student of the Month. Great job Mrs. B!

That will be edited out.

Then came Lesson #2 or as I should call it "Just because I told that kid to come up with another way to find resources other than Google does not mean you can say Yahoo or Ask.com". (have these kids never heard of the encyclopedia? Geez) There were several disruptions, but none compared to the insanity that erupted when, after dodging 5 weather related questions and one about my favorite phone provider (try to dislodge the lesson from its course much?), a person came over the intercom and announced that school would be closing due to the weather at 11am. Yeah, that same weather I had just had to dismiss 5 minutes earlier. Oh Lord help me! They went WILD!

So what did I do, I laughed it off and told the kids they could...and I quote "smile so big it made their faces hurt but we were going to finish the lesson if it was the last thing I ever did".  I restated the objective, and made the a comment that I was doing it because they probably forgot they were even at school after that announcement, and went about my merry way.

Which then led to my homeroom showing up at my door and banging it down (while giggling insanily) and insisting they needed to get their stuff. All lead by another teacher. So I opened the door and whispered loudly "I am in the middle of a ULM observation go away!" The poor lab teacher looked like she was about to die.

I honestly don't remember what happened after that. Other than constantly restating that the lesson would go on. But it was sheer insanity. Luckily I have a very nice supervisor who when I jokingly asked had she ever seen an observation have so many interruptions, and she said that it was real life an that is what she likes to see. Thank God I have a nice lady looking out for me this year. She has been so encouraging, and constantly reminds me what I forget. Love her!

So teachers, what was your most interesting observation?

teacher tidbits*

September 30, 2010

Today started crazy as usual. My class this year has energy to say the least. Well we changed classes, I started teaching Science again and suddenly the unthinkable happened. Fire drill.....I have yet to receive my drill map. My students lined up like we had rehearsed for this or something, and I stood in the hall asking teachers were I was supposed to go. We went outside, came back in...end of story.

Or so I thought.

Well my homeroom had a bit of a incident. Apparently (leading up to the fire alarm) my students had not thought to bring pencils to their next class, that teacher applies the policy I used last year and requires a shoe trade for a pencil. I just haven't gotten aggravated enough yet to do it this year. Well apparently my half shoeless class heard the alarm and instead of finding a shoe decided to fall out in the floor yelling and rolling around like nuts.

Was I surprised? No I was laughing so hard when I heard this the principal came out to tell the kids to be quiet...truth be told it was me. (uh oh) The teacher who currently had them was cracking me up, she threatened the mess out of me if I didn't warn her ahead of time that they were having "one of those days" again. In her words "At least stick your head out in the hall to yell they are psycho", she kills me.

Needless to say I can only imagine a whole class rolling around with no shoes during a fire drill.

Who else is excited tomorrow is Friday?

is there something they forgot to tell me?

I had a bit of a meeting the other day that has me pretty irritated...and its been a few days. Apparently your age and height have a lot to do with how well you manage a classroom. Who knew. And apparently someone forgot to tell me I was born a little person cause I am apparently having problems due to my height, either than or I'm four years old and no one mentioned it to me. But at the same time I was told I needed to find a way to overcome this height issue...what height issue? I could have swore 5'4'' was average! But hey, after my last crazy comment I blurted out and quickly realized it would probably come back to haunt me...in two to four weeks...life in the teaching realm can't get any worse.

The little comment went this way:

Intercom: Can you please send ______ to the office.

Student: What on earth did I do?

Me: Hey, I'm just glad to see someone else being called to the office other than me.

How much money do you wanna bet this one gets reworded and comes back in a few weeks. Trust me it will, I apparently called the kids hoodrats and supposedly someone spit in my trash can and I said "Don't spit in my F-ing trash can!" Do you want to know my theory on why this is happening...I am following the rules and taking away recess and writing kids up when they break rules and they are lashing out at me...now if someone would just believe me when I say they are attempting to take a career hit out on me. I'm not joking, one kid told a kid in my class they were going to make me nuts till I quit or lie till I get fired. Vindictive? Yes! Will I survive? Guess we will find out. Needless to say anyone who is thinking about having kids should hang out with some, this is hardcore birth control.
