More Than 5 Things on Friday

March 8, 2024

What did I do last weekend? Based on my camera roll it appears I fermented things and sewed.

[One] I tried my hand at French style yogurt. You use the Oui brand as your based and heat whole milk. After I finished painfully heating milk I read that you can also make it out of ultra refined Fairlife. So while this first batch was vanilla with blueberry preserves, I made a batch last night with chocolate Fairlife milk. The macros will be way better and I've got my fingers crossed that it just tastes good overall.

I don't own a candy thermometer so I borrowed the one Jeremy uses to fry in his big ole pot. I propped it up on a big glass jar to keep the point from touching the bottom of the pan and giving a false read.

[Two] I've made potato flake sour dough for several years and lost ours after we moved back to Louisiana. Over Christmas I had a friend restock me and we've been back to baking bread. My favorite has been a cinnamon loaf that I'd like to remake and add raisins.

[Three] I didn't time my bread well and it would have been done Monday morning instead of Monday night. I enlisted a trick I learned from Murmurs of Ricotta (with her cinnamon roll recipe) and popped the bread in the fridge over night on Sunday. Then it spent the day rising for the last time Monday and came out great.

[Four] This was the photo I sent Mom as I was trying to figure out how to get the bobbin correct. Seriously I really would like to forgo feeding anyone this weekend and just set up shop in the kitchen and sew the entire time we are off.

[Five] It's been quite evident that I didn't plant my salad seed mix early enough. As of right now I've got a side salad for one and need to start ripping it out to get my other plants in next weekend.

Honestly this weekend I need to trip the hydrangeas, fertilize, and then purchase 5 distyliums because my foray into gardenia gardener ended terribly after a drought/heatwave/and freeze combo.

[Six] If you've thought, surely you're done fermenting now Emily, you were wrong. I also had to bottle another batch of kombucha and spent yet another week making unflavored because I've been too lazy to puree and store my fresh ginger. (I really prefer ginger kombucha as a means of eating more ginger.)

Kombucha bottles with the evening sun hitting them. What could be better?

Five Things on Friday

February 23, 2024

Life so far the past two months, let's see...

Little bit got glasses. Turns out he was blind as a bat in one eye and now looks like he will file your taxes. Pre-K during the day, CPA in the evenings

I don't want y'all to think this is Elliot heavy, it is, but he is the child that will hold still for the camera.

This particular Elliot incident made me laugh, he hates underwear. Seriously, we have a deal that he doesn't have to wear underwear on Saturday, but it's a requirement for church and school.

For a child that doesn't want to participate in underwear, explain to me why he was wearing two pair of shorts?

This predates 2024, but we took family photos with Carlie Ann Collective in October. This happens to be a silly one. I told Jeremy we really have to get better at family photos. To date we have only had professional photos taken: for our engagement, wedding, Harrison's newborns, Elliot's newborns... and then this mini session.

Where are my blind friends who wear tortoise shell glasses at?

When I tell y'all I have to have a second pair of glass to locate my primary pair of glasses. These were located after a whole day search and it's an absolute miracle I ever found them.

I could honestly write an entire blog post about the trouble with Cockapoos. Dill has a penchant for only behaving when he knows he's being watched. He won't get on the furniture at all, until we aren't home. Don't let it rain or this nut will come tearing through the house spreading dirt everywhere. He also won't take your food... until you turn your back. He's never been a furniture chewer and is very potty trained, so I'll give him those well deserved brownie points.

Then he has his Lassie moments. There have been a few times he's come to alert me of something, a mouse he found in the yard and what not. The other day he got in panties in a wad when I left the windows open and Jeremy started doing yard work. I was working out in the bedroom and he came running in barking like a crazy dog.

Harrison insisted I "see what Dill wanted" and as it turns out he wanted the windows closed.

Then he does things like this... sitting on a poster thinking it is a blanket.

Friday Five | The Sneaux is Falling

February 7, 2020

The flu has finally left the building... and hopefully we don't get other strains either.

I've never seen Harrison kicked so low, by the end of this he had lost enough weight that we could see his back hip bones. So you can go ahead and guess that we've let him eat whatever on earth his heart desires this week to try and gain it back.

Does anyone else get excited about morning light. I love Saturday's simply for the fact that it is the one day I can slowly get up and appreciate the light in the morning. It's so pretty streaming in through the kitchen, any kitchen really, I've taken so many early morning kitchen photos over the years.

So the Super Bowl? Man I love Louisiana fans.

During math groups this week a had one of the kids cracking up at me and it brought back a memory of teaching those first few years... that I clearly haven't quit doing.

So, when I taught at Coteau Bayou Blue in Houma the secretary had a "medicine drawer" in the office for the teachers. For months I heard people saying they needed medicine and wandering in there. Turns out it was a candy drawer will full size bars she got at Sam's Club. Since then, at every school I worked at, I've also had a medicine drawer.

This week I needed the medicine drawer during math. Man I hate fractions.

The new Simply Earth box for February came in much like every month... I love it! I wish I wasn't so whoo hoo about it. But I can't help it and I sure can't find other words to describe my love.

They've got a ton of great discounts running this month (listed in my post) so be sure to check them out.

FIRST SNOW IN ALABAMA!

It didn't stick, but it was really pretty with the heavy snow fall for a few hours this morning.

I know I'm a nut when it comes to snow, Jeremy wasn't quite as quick to take off running outside. But I'm a born and raised Louisiana girl. We rarely get snow. Even this kind, it's super rare. I can also promise you I remember every time it did actually snow in my life. Then again I grew up with a mom who would get excited about it for us and funny enough a Granny who didn't know the difference between frost and snow and got excited more often than the rest of us.

Bless it. Tropical dwelling individuals aren't great at spotting snow.

The last time it actually snowed in Louisiana we were up at 6am before it had a chance to melt, having the time of our lives. I wish Harrison was a bit more sturdy, he was back in doors quick. I on the other hand, stood out there until it was gone.

The only thing better than fall is snow.

Tell me what y'all've been up to this week!

I think this weekend I'm going on the hunt for a king cake and dragging my people to a The Rougaroux in Brimingham,  I've been a touch homesick. There will also be groceries and laundry, but we don't have to think about that.

Friday Five

January 10, 2020

For the record, that's not my hand. It's a grabby baby.

I found our first Alabama king cake this week, Elliot being too small to taste last year finally got a bite this year. He's such the child to refuse to try new things, he flat refused king cake. So I forced it on him. Now he yells if you pass it and don't give him a bite.

Go figure.

One of our fave neighbors from our old cul-de-sac sent the boys a box of Christmas goodies. You can tell Naomi knows Harry well... cookies, slime, bath toys. Elliot... he got in the box and then stole Cheetos from Harrison.

Someone has to buy this child his beloved chocolate chip cookies... because Mama sure isn't doing it lol!

My later than his late walking brother decided to take a few steps on Friday. Since then he's rarely been excited to walk much but stands like he's winning a prize. He's going to get his little self hurt acting just like his bother did, they want to practice all new skills in the tub.

That's about it for this week. We haven't been up to much, but tomorrow we will be hunkering down with the bad weather that is blowing through. Something about weather is making me much more nervous than it ever did in Louisiana. We had tornadoes, but I wasn't one to panic about them. Maybe it's the storm shelter at our house, but I am a basket case when it gets gross outside.

Calgon take me away where the hurricanes are my worst worry and nothing sneaks up on you.
