When you let a 3 year old get in the way of your better judgement...

March 24, 2013

Being that I'm the cool aunt, and well seemingly the only aunt, I tend to do what ever is requested of me from this child. I spend my life disciplining children, teaching things that really matter according to whoever is in charge of our state these days, and being an adult

Sorry, but it is hard to be an 'adult' when you wake up some mornings fearing you missed the bus...a bus that passed well over a decade ago.

I digress.

My life is about being responsible and setting some example, so when it comes to this kids it all goes out of the window. He is the only child you will ever see me act this silly with, have conversations with fish with, and ever listen to what he says to do even when I know I shouldn't.

Which brings me to yesterday.

We shopped till we dropped, introduced ourselves to every fish in PetSmart, ate enough flat taffy to kill a diabetic at Hobby Lobby, and bought the craziest bouncy ball...that would come back to bite us in the butt later.

Fast forward to when we got home last night, Joshua was insisting I bouce the ball really high. So far the first few bounces went well. Then...then, he asked me to bounce it really hard, in the hallway. Just so we are clear, I had a moment of mental absense that that glass light fixture that has existed in this house since I was born was at that moment in existance in this hallway. So I bounced the ball.

Oh and it bounced high. So high it knocked off the light fixture covering, which is all glass, sending it sailing straight towards my sister's dog (if she were a human she'dwould be classified as having Generalized Anxiety Disorder, she once got freaked out in a game of chase and jumped onto my parents bed and peed on my mother's pillow) and smacked her in the back before exploding into opaque white shards everywhere

Now I realize that was the longest run-on sentence ever, but it is how I'd say it in real life, so we will over look that for now.

So at that point, I'm standing in the hallway, looking at a super freaked out Spaniel mix, a 3 year old who can't decide if he sould play in the glass or say something to me, and two weenie dogs who's first instint is to run through the glass with their tiny little paws.

After a moment of silence Joshua looked dead at me with the most serious 'you're in trouble' look I've ever seen on his face and he angrily proclaimed "That was NOT cool Meme!" For a second I thought he was going to insist I go into time out. Luckily I just got a speech. "Meme, you threw the ball too hard...it went waaay up dere (there), and hit that ting (thing), and it broked. Not cool Meme. Not cool."

I just got schooled by a pre-k kid. Oops!

So schooled, that he got up this morning to tell me that throwing the ball super high was not cool.

Perhaps I'll never live this down.

I do know one thing though, I need to go get another light fixture this afternoon.

Let them eat cake!

January 11, 2013

I'm a bit late posting today, but I did drive 3 hours to central Louisiana (yes 3 hours...we are that far south these days), celebrate a birthday, and go to the mall...aka the Natchez Wal-Mart.

Tonight we just did family. Needless to say the flooded roads caused me to miss dinner, but I got cake so all is well. Laura got Joshua's cake from The Bakery Cottage in Vidalia (they did our wedding cakes), she wanted red velvet...let's just say he got a nice warning. Apparently people order this for kids and then complain that their kids are (TMI warning) pooping red for days ha!
Mom and Dad got him a Fisher Price camera since he has been the theft behind all our ours disappearing...mainly Mom's. To say he loved it is an understatement...in about 45 minutes he had taken 147 photos. He took photos of me. He took photos of the dog. He took photos of the cake. And then he fussed at us for wanting to look at his camera. Oh 3 year olds!
Blowing out candles!
For the 2nd time because Mimi didn't have her camera on the right setting, then again there is never a right setting indoors and at night with my camera.
And since he is in fact 3 now he went ahead and decided he should do it a 3rd time...why stop at two?
Don't you just love the photo quality? Way to focus on the slice of cake Nikon ha! Joshua wouldn't eat the icing from the outside, maybe because it was fondant. However I love The Bakery Cottage's fondant. He ate only from the middle of the cake...then fuss at Granddaddy for stealing a bite of fondant.
About halfway though the cake Dad made the comment that a certain someone was going to be on the sugar high of his life...he was indeed quite cake wasted. He definitely got that glazed over look I've seen on quite a few kids after a good mouthful of icing. Oh little boys. How I love this one, but hope we only have girls. Or maybe I should hope we have children that are agreeable like my sister was as a child. Somehow she gave birth to my mini me, the kid is literally the boy version of me.

Stubborn and right.

At least he thinks he is right.

Catch-up & my favorite breakfast dessert

November 9, 2012

This isn't the most in-order post ever, but whatever! It is Friday finally, and praise God for it! Needless to say being off for election day totally threw me off. I am perfectly fine going to work everyday, but when I get off work I start fantasizing about not working...quitting...being fired...which then turns into me looking for ways I can work somewhere with more freedom. Needless to say nothing pays someone with a Masters in Teaching quite as well as being a teacher...there are no other jobs for me.

See what an odd day off does to me? Ruins the whole week. I am the opposite of productive when I have a random day off.

........................................

Last weekend we took Joshua to see Sesame Street Live. Quite the interesting experience. I don't think he slept well the night before, and was in need of more napping the day of. He started off great, but we all know how quickly the tides turn with 2 year olds.

He is so funny how he thinks Jeremy and I are so great, mainly because he doesn't see us much which makes us a bit of a hot commodity, but still fun none the less. He follows Jeremy around and wants to do whatever he does. Friday night Jeremy helped himself to some ice cream...and Joshua helped himself to Jeremy's bowl. I was cracking up when Laura tried to get some and Joshua wouldn't let her because "it was his and Jeremy's ice cream."

Saturday we headed out for Sesame Street sans Jeremy, he was at the church helping with the Fall Festival. Can you tell how excited little dude was about seeing Big Bird?

See all those Elmo ballons? Parents were nearly running to get one at intermission...10 bucks per mylar Elmo head. Needless to say we did not purchase one. I nearly fainted when the guy said the price.
Cracker Barrell was also on the list, I was in desperate need of another pumpkin custard, sadly I have to report the wait was far too long. I think I may die without my pumpkin custard soon. Instead we headed across the street to Whataburger. While Laura was ordering Josh came and sat across from me, folded his arms and said "Hi Mimi, I'm Joshua." Too cute!

..............................................
I tried out Megan's curl down method the other day and it worked out pretty well. I need more practice, seriously I haven't curled my hair in years and I think I forgot how!

....................................................

Today we went to speak at the local high school's FCA meeting, and when I say "we" I mean that I looked cute while our friend Luke did all the talking. I am not much for public speaking and actually had a panic attack last year when I was supposed to talk at FCA. Yeah I know, I'm a hot mess.
Just so happened before I left I found a cute outfit pic and decided to try it out.

Last but not least here is my favorite healthy dessert/breakfast recipe. When I am really wanting sweets this hits the spot.
Greek Yogurt Parfait:
1/2 cup plain greek yogurt
1 banana, sliced
few dashes of cinnamon
1-2 tbsp honey

Combine ingredients in bowl and enjoy!
I also like to add berries, granola, nuts,
or dried fruit depending on what I have on hand.

Lessons in Child Raising - From the Aunt

August 29, 2012

I've often wondered how Moms walk dogs and babies at the same time.

I think I've figured it out.

Allow me to share a graphic example of how you to can walk the dogs and baby at the same time:
Notice all the key parts of this photo.

#1 The toddler is holding the dog leash with two hands.
       - because one hand isn't safe, we figured this out when he let go of the dog
#2 Dog happiness is of utmost concern.
       - when your 6 year old 12lb weenie dog quits walking no one wants to carry that...so you put it in the basket under the stroller.
#3 The aunt who looks so chawed because the neighbors said something to her about this...as the lead dog dragged the strolled off the road nearly crashing us all into a pristine flower bed.
       - There were two other "adults" with me, they walked behind me cackling.
#4 If you are going to use a weenie dog as a sled dog it is best the dogs understands some commands.
      - It may look cute to teach the 2 yr old to yell mush (while it only draws more attention to the already ridiculous situation), it is more crucial that the dog understand commands like stop when approaching oncoming traffic.

Realize I didn't tell y'all how to do this without getting funny looks, or without causing a scene. I also should have mentioned this is best done in a neighborhood where the local Garden Club members aren't present. I think they cringe when they see my dogs coming.

Don't for a second think I am exaggerating this one either. The only thing that would make it more comical would be partaking in this activity today...while Hurricane Isaac hits. Because a wind blown baby and an insane weenie dog would be much funnier in your flowerbed.

What is your funniest or most embarrassing moment as an aunt, uncle, or grandparent so far?

{weekend before last}

February 24, 2011

I can't believe I have put this post this far off. Procrastinate much? Here are the pics from V-Day weekend. Let's start with the snow day, Thursday 2-10-11.
{thursday}
 Why the guilty look Maddie?
Oh, that is because nothing says boredom like eating my boot/slippers.
I got payback though. I ate my Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich next to her, and didn't share.
{friday}
We went back to work on Friday even though there was still a good 2 inches of snow everywhere. I took this pic at 3:20pm after most of it had melted and the temperature was around 40 or 50.
My ever so classy husband gave me my VDay present early. He told me not to post but I thought it was hilarous! {I had told him not to get me anything but a card} He walked into my parents house holding a WalMart bag he had tied the handle into a bow on. It contained the following, the bear, some strawberry marshmallow candy, my card, and fuel injector. Priceless!
{saturday}
While watching the baby wander around the back yard with my Dad I realized he was now breeding pigeons, or doves. Whatever the heck they were. I had never seen a baby piegon though, so this was really cool...and really ugly. I was young enough that its beak was still soft.
 {sunday}
Nap time, my dogs are always looking for someone to nap on.
I thought this was just as weird as can be. Ellie has never wanted to sleep on me like this...at least since she was a 4lb puppy. But that is what Ellie wanted, so Ellie got it. I had the worst neck cramp afterward by the way.
Valentine's dinner at Biscuits & Blues. We had their crawfish & mushroom stuffed beignet.
Aren't they sweet? They love to share. Gross.
This my friends is a picture of jealousy. When Laura picked up Ellie, Joshua walked up...bent over...and stuck his head under the dog as a means of pushing her out of the way. I think he has watched Ellie do that to much.
 It kind of worked.

But he wasn't content sharing a lap.
 So out Ellie went.
Now someone please explain to me why you can't share your Mom's lap but you can share your cookie?

Hope you all had a good weekend before last...or that you at least managed to post about yours sooner than I did! Ha!

{the correct way to wash a baby}

July 29, 2010

I highly doubt any of you every wondered if you were actually washing your baby the correct way, but there is a correct way. My sister recently learned this.
She wasn't thinking much about her actions and washing him from bottom to top. My Mom asked her if she would wash her head with the same thing she washed her butt with. She doesn't. But good point right.

When I helped her bathe him last Saturday night my Mom was quick to pick on her. Luckily Joshua was bathed from top to bottom. Needless to say the poor kid will be tormented when he starts dating.
Lesson learned.

Freeman Family Reunion

July 27, 2010

Saturday we had our annual Freeman family get together in Natchitoches. As usual the uncles were as bad as ever. I feel sorry for Aunt Billie and Nanny having to grow up with those guys, but they have some pretty funny stories. Really makes you realize just how much parents don't let their kids get away with these days.

Some of the guys playing music.
Amber and Brittany playing a dance game on the Wii.
Brittany and JC
Me and Jeremy, I was continually getting smacked with the controller while we danced to Spice Girls- Wanna Be.
Beginning of tired baby eyes.
This one cracks me up. Passed out with his fingers in his mouth and his fat baby gut hanging out. Look at those thunder thighs!
How much did you people spend on his baby toys? Should have just bought a pack of water bottles. Half full water bottle is the funniest thing ever for some odd reason. I started a bad habit by letting him drink out of my water bottle. Now he thinks he HAS to drink out of my water bottle. Baby won't take a bottle or a sippy cup for juice, but he can drink out of a Ozarka bottle.
All of that happiness didn't last long. 30 miles out of Vidalia he decided he was mad and it was time to eat.

the weekend

June 28, 2010

This makes wedding # 4 out of the 8 we are attending this summer. That means we are halfway done! Yay. The wedding we went to Saturday was for Ethan and Rebekah. Rebekah actually caught the bouquet at our wedding. I hate that now that I'm married I'm no longer allowed to catch the bouquet. That was so much fun. Anyway, here are some pics from the wedding.

Love their exit, their church is so beautiful.
One good pic of us at the wedding. I don't have many pics of us...mostly of everyone else.
Her sister was taking longer than she wanted to get the champagne to toast and the newly weds started finding their own fun. They even danced while waiting on her haha.

I was such a fun and lovely wedding. I just love going to wedding where the whole crowd will get up and dance...you don't see that much in Baptist land. Our Presbyterian friends know how to throw a party.  I am so glad they all came to our wedding and danced the whole night with us. It really makes a big difference when you have crazy friends.

End of Part 1

Intermission

Part 2

Sunday was baby dedication at my home church in Vidalia. Joshua is usually a good baby...but Sunday someone woke up earlier than usual, thew off his feeding schedule, and decided during dedication it was time to eat....then proceeded to holler at his Mom through the prayer.
Two Suez photo from Josh's 1 month shoot.
I need to stop chewing gum during pics. Just so happened my cousin Jessica and her son Carter{who is about a week younger than the monster} got to stand next to us.
........................................................

Is anyone else even remotely grossed out by this?
Baby's eating baby food grosses me out big time. First time I saw him rice cereal while I was trying to eat my yogurt I had to throw it away. The two looked to close together. It looks like Laura was just flicking green beans at him.
