31 Days - Breastfeeding

October 13, 2015

We've hit the breastfeeding day of the month, and I'm probably the most excited about this one.

While this might not fall under crunchy in some places, it seems to where I live. Not many women nurse, and I've gotten some interesting comments about it over the past 7 months.

With that said, and all the ups and downs I've experience in the past months, I thought I'd share the tids and bits I've learned so far.

First up are two resources that have saved me many times, one being Kelly Mom. This is what I prefer for middle of the night freaking out. She is also a great resource for pumping.

The second one is what I listen to every single day on the way to work, The Boob Group podcast from New Mommy Media.

Between The Boob Group & a lactation consultant I was able to trouble shoot my way out of a very gloomy few weeks.

You see, it was all roses and sunshine until the end of the second full month when I had a major over production issue. I literally had every symptom in the books but was reaching for help in all the wrong directions.

The doctor was zero help and said the baby problems were due to colic.

I love my friends so don't get me wrong, but they hadn't experienced this and couldn't exactly trouble shoot. They just talked me off ledges.

Finally a good friend of ours directed me to a lactation consultant who immediately said over supply and in no time the problem was solved.

So without further rambling, here are my big lessons I've learned in breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Tips & Tricks

- Nipple Shields don't work for everyone. My sister used them and it set her in motion to have a great breastfeeding experience when her baby initially wouldn't latch, it also saved her nipple pain. I on the other hand couldn't get  the baby to latch onto it to save my life. If you can get the baby to latch to one it can potentially help with all the nipple issues that initially arise.

- Skip the lanolin. Skin allergies run in our group so I didn't want to touch the stuff, my sister was allergic to it as a baby. Instead I opted for an organic food grade alternative, Honest Company Nipple Balm. Coconut Oil works great too, and I've recently seen a new line called Zoe Organics released a similar product. I honestly never had chapped nipples for longer than maybe an hour in the early days thanks to Honest Company Nipple Balm. The entire reason I initially bought the stuff was simply because I didn't want the baby ingesting chemicals while nursing, it seems to be a bit counterproductive to me... and I didn't like the notion of having to wipe mess off every single time.

- Invest in a good nursing pillow. The Boppy has held up great for us.

- The first week of the baby's life lay around and cuddle your baby. Nurse on demand. You, yourself, hold and cuddle the baby. Babies can smell breastmilk from 50 feet away, you will more easily learn hunger cues if your baby is at your side and rooting around for your breast. I didn't do this and I regret it, I allowed other people to dictate what the baby was doing when I was too weak to get out of bed and do things myself. Next baby, that ain't happening.

- Your supply is at its highest the first 3 months. How much you nurse and what demand is put on your body has a big effect on your output in the coming months. My supply was at its highest the first 3-4 months. Over the summer I took a break from pumping while I was off work and that mixed with a baby who dropped middle of the night feeds caused my supply to drop big time (as far as pumping output was concerned). It took quite a bit of time to get it back up to where I wanted it to be.

- That brings me to my next point…there is a lot of mixed opinions on whether or not to night pump after your baby drops the middle of the night feed. For myself it hurt my supply during the day. Without the extra demand my body quit making as much, it would have been great had I stayed home (there would have been zero need to night pump) but returning to work meant that I needed X amount of milk to send to the sitter daily. I tried setting and alarm and not setting an alarm, pumping for 10 minutes & going until the flow stopped…I finally decided what worked best for me was setting an alarm. Your supply is at its highest between 1-5AM, and I’ve found that pumping at 2:30 every morning is my ideal time. It allows me enough time to go back to sleep and enough time to build up what I need for that pumping session.

- There is what I’ve considered the unicorn of breastfeed/pumping that I finally achieved at 7 months and that’s the double letdown. When it finally happened for me it was in the middle of the night during a pumping session and I just kept pumping because the milk kept coming, it was a record pumping session! I’ve honestly seen my response to the pump and my output increase once that happened.

- My big tip for pumpers is to do the same thing every single time. I hear a lot of women say that they could just never let down for the pump, and that’s because you have to treat it like the baby. When you nurse your body recognizes the baby, or at least you do, and you let down. There are telltale signs for every woman, some include crying. Many women like to watch videos of their baby to induce letdown, I’ve found that doing the same thing every time works for me. I either read a book or work on whatever bible study I’m currently on. If I don’t…I don’t let down.

- If your supply plummets you can get it back, there is hope. So many mamas quit when it seems to vanish one day but there is so much playing into it that you do have options! First and foremost up your fluid intake, water is #1 but Gatorade and Powerade are great if you’re a bit dehydrated. (Trust me I understand, I’m not a huge drinker and can easily become dehydrated) Coconut water is another great liquid if you’re trying to boost supply. Your intake for the day should be half of your body weight in ounces, at the least. Next up find your supplements, I like brewer’s yeast and fenugreek. The downside of both is that they make you super hungry, but they will boost your milk supply in no time. For fenugreek take 2-3 capsules at every meal (3 times a day), when you and the baby both start smelling like maple syrup in 72 hours you know you’ve had enough. Don’t take fenugreek for more than a few days in a row at a time. I like making cookies out of brewer’s yeast and will just chomp on several of those for a week. Another favorite to increase supply is to start power pumping, I prefer to just pump an extra 15 minutes after the baby has finished nursing though. Oh oatmeal! How could I nearly pass this stuff up, eat it for breakfast and if you’re feeling low eat a bit before bedtime as well. It’s a miracle food.

- If oversupply ever becomes a problem (baby choking while nursing, spraying milk, green poop) start block feeding. That basically means only feeding the baby from one side per nursing session. If your letdown becomes too aggressive take the baby off and let down into a burp cloth to prevent baby from choking. If you want to take advantage of the oversupply you can pump out the other breast and start storing that milk for later. If not within a few days you will see your supply level out. It may be painful, but if need be pump for a few minutes just to release the pressure. If you don’t want to do that and then clean a pump you can always hand express a bit out. Do be careful to not get a plugged duct though, I had a nasty fever one night when I was trying to correct my oversupply due to plugged ducts.

I don’t think I’ve covered everything I could have, but this post is getting long and at the moment my mind has gone blank. I’d love for everyone to share their nursing tips in the comments below, I always love hearing your ideas!

I could totally go off on a half crazed rant right now. Mainly because there are stories to share, but I will save that for later.

Well anyway, not only do I have something to be positive about because I found some Twinings Tea at WalMart (now if I could just get my hands on some spaghetti squash).

I also have a whole mess of affirmations I keep telling myself. For one, there is nothing wrong with being a 25 yr old woman with a Master's Degree, career, and zero children. It doesn't make me any less of  a woman, or a wife. I spend my Saturday's running, catching up on the DVR, and grading papers and there is nothing wrong with that. I honestly shouldn't let people with opposite opinions of what a girl my age should be up to. If I want to stand on my head drinking hot tea while I travel the world in a giant bouncy ball it is my prerogative.

So there you go, who cares if crazy southerners who stick to archaic traditions of marrying super young and having a baby before you hit, heck all your babies before you hit my age think I am looney tunes. I must be a hard working level headed one then, cause this graduate wife doesn't see jack wrong with higher education and a dern job.

Was that positive? I totally mean it in the most positive way possible haha!

31 Days

October 5, 2011

I honestly can't think of any one positive event that stands out today. There was nothing overly negative. But as usual, it was just a regular mundane day, not in a bad way of course. Mundane is always better than dramatic and eventful. I thrive on daily schedules.

Wait that does remind me. While I do thrive on a good schedule [I honestly had my day mapped out by the hour in college] today's twist in schedule left me with an unexpected down time. Just enough down time to get together a reading strategies lesson for tomorrow and hang up/put together my homemade bulletin board. Our rooms have a partition for a wall, some rooms have two partition walls. This does not make for teacher friendly outlets and wall space. Therefore I made a makeshift board by hanging a tri-fold cardboard display board on the wall and jazzing it up with junk.

I'll leave you with my favorite bible verse, especially since it is a 31. I need to practice my scripture memory before S.S.M.T. rolls around in January.

She clothes herself in strength and dignity, and will rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue is the law of kindness. Proverbs 31:25-26

31 Days of Positive

October 4, 2011

I am not going to lie, today has been pretty mundane. I did find a positive though, and it happened at work.

This morning I was about to show the kids a video about reading strategies and informational resources and the principal walked in. She said she didn't want to interrupt and started to turn back around, but I knew what they were coming by for so I told her to stay and what we were up to anyway. Just then she said something I have never heard a principal say, "That video sounds awesome, don't y'all have the best teacher ever! And the best school!" One of my favorite little nuts did throw in some humor to that and added "It'd be better if she shared her coffee!" I nearly fell out in the floor laughing, it kind of caught her off guard. But it was funny none the less. You have just got to love this age group, they are so witty and silly.

So that is my positive. I really do have a great school/administration/everything. Honestly, after my experience last year it was going to take a great year like this to want to teach another year. It is such an odd feeling to actually care about the people you work with.

The little notes of affirmation and kind words our administration often leaves and says to me [and other teachers too] really give me that extra boost to do my best for the students and for my school. Just goes to show what a difference a positive encouraging environment will do for a teacher.

If you want your teachers to love your children and love their job, you have to love your teachers.

31 Days of Positive

October 3, 2011

Today's post is going to be short and sweet. Only because I haven't had dinner yet due to not getting home from work until 7pm. Yay teacher workshops.

So today's positive is- Our neighbor's got a black and tan dachshund puppy!
If you know anything about me know this...dachshunds are my  happy. My heart is about to explode, I could just lay in the floor and let puppies crawl all over me:)

I did throw in there that I could babysit whenever. And I totally will.

31 days of positive/getting punched in the face

October 2, 2011

In case you missed yesterday's post. I am linking up with 31 days, my goal is to find something positive everyday to blog about. I am a big cynic, and this is my way of breaking my bad cynical habit.

I actually found a lot of positive today. I did catch myself mentally identifying negative things-and yes-thinking about them. However, overall it was positive.

For starters Sunday School was great-funny to call it SS after it was Life Group at First West for so many years to me.

I cooked, not to brag, the best pot roast, mashed potatoes, and blackberry cobbler ever! I then proceeded to sleep it off only to wake up an hour later to eat some more and make myself sick. My brain has got to start shutting my stomach off sooner, or at least give me random cases of lock jaw.

After cobbler round 2 I took yet another nap, only to wake up and walk the dogs, get punch in the face by my husband, and then get rewarded with a Starbucks caramel apple spice cider [which I assume was to make up for the potential black eye I am developing].

Now this is not negative, just hilarious. Which is why I am elaborating on it. [side note: I know  a lot of people don't like to pick on their relationship with their signification other, but ours is often times comical so I just have  to]

Yes, Jeremy punched me in the face while we were walking the dogs. How you ask? Well his sub-par dachshund/retractable leash skills finally got the best of him. You see, Jeremy walking a dog looks awfully like a Scott fly fishing in the highlands. Thanks to a few bikers Maddie took off across the street, and in walked Jeremy and his reeling-the-dog-back-in act. About the second time he pulled that arm back to reel himself in a furry one my eye got caught in the cross fire. I was then smacked with a fist/retractable dog leash. Yes, it hurt. Jeremy immediately thought I was crying and freaked out. But I just had to laugh at this one, we could have won the 100,000 on America's Funniest Home Videos had someone had a camera.

Secretly I hope to have a black eye, just so I can say that my husband punched me. I will be jokingly holding this one over his head for quite some time.

That all leads me to right now, sitting at my trusty Dell, sipping my apple cider, and blogging. Couldn't be a better day.

This is totally random but I couldn't figure out how to fit it in the post...when I asked the guy at Starbucks what the Caramel Apple Spice was he told me, and I quote: "Hot apple juice with whip cream and a little caramel spice syrup." Starbucks dude, please don't ever try to work a high end restaurant, because with those descriptive skills you won't sell jack crap. It just cracks me up he said apple juice instead of cider. Okay, maybe that is just me finding funny in the nit picky things.

What positive thing did you notice today?
Night y'all.

31 days

October 1, 2011

Recently I've seen bloggers linking up to the 31 days of... on different blogs. Of course, I wanted to participate...I need to be a better blogger and blog daily, if not just more often. I can easily post things that are nonsense like what am I wearing and food posts. Bu it isn't often that I actually write in depth, and when I do it is quite often an negative rant.

But let's face it, negative ranting come easily to me. I am naturally a negative realistic person. I don't see the world as being full of flowers and happy people. I don't skip around on clouds and bake cupcakes late at night for random reasons. I see the world for what it is, a deep dark pile of hateful lunatics. Sadly, too often I am right in the middle being hateful along with them.

I was once told by a professor of mine that I was the most cynical 18yr old he had ever met. He was right, between the ages of 18-21 I found every reason to pull the negative out of a situation, because the negative was pulling the positive out of me.

So without further hesitation, as part of the 31 days of blog link up I have decided to post about:

Because honestly, I need to be more positive. If I am off hunting for positive everyday for a whole month I am bound to create some sort of habit and develop a more positive outlook. So here goes today's first post:

By 9:50 this morning I have already found my positive thing-I ran a whole mile without stopping.

Never in my life have I ran that far without having to walk. Seriously I walk 80% of the runs I go on. So this was a massive accomplishment-coming in good time-considering I am running in the 5K portion of the Jazz Half this month.

I spent the whole run pushing myself and saying that I could do it. I wasn't running fast, but I sure did make it. Even when I was in the "best shape of my life" and the lowest weight of my adult life I couldn't run farther than from my house to the stop sign barely .2 of a mile from my apartment. I could lift weights and run on a Precor like I was making money doing it, but run on the ground, no 'mam.

So yay for me! I did it, and 10lbs heavier than I was a 21 and 5lbs from my happy weight. I guess I am in better shape than I thought.
