The Nursery

February 27, 2015

I've been meaning to share the baby's room, but in my pregnant fashion have procrastinated on it. So today, I'm sharing the completed thing... before Jeremy mounts the ugly monitor and the black out screen goes up.

Almost all of our furniture came from Ikea, I splurged on a few items though.
The main thing was making this as cute as possible without it being overly expensive.
I'll point out the non-Ikea items as we wander through.

The rocker/glider came from Babies R Us. I was nervous about how it would turn out, but I really like it. I also wanted to get some sort of poof instead of the ottoman that came with it but never landed on anything I loved.

The giraffe came from Pottery Barn. As a kid I always wanted one of the huge stuffed animals from Toys R Us and Mom would never spend that insane amount on it... so I did all these years later.

And to clarify... it's not the baby's ha!

Also, here's the name.

I didn't plan to not share it the entire pregnancy, but as a blogger you constantly get judged for under or over sharing. This was just one of those things that I'd talk about in person, but I still haven't plastered to Facebook or IG. I just haven't felt the need.

The bedding, oh the bedding!

This is the Harper Collection from Pottery Barn.
I wanted something neutral so that when we do have baby #2 I don't have to buy all new everything.
This definitely fell in the splurge category.

The bookshelf was all Jeremy. I showed him a photo from Pinterest that I liked and he just ran with it, the shelves are photo ledges from Ikea. Now this is where it pays to be a teacher, I've been hoarding Scholastic points for years and spent them all on baby books.

Didn't even have to pay shipping!

The little wooden toys you see around the nursery, as well as any stuffed animals also came from Ikea. They really have some cute classic items in the kids section right now.

The lamp is a Target lamp that I found at Dirt Cheap for literally 1/3 of the cost.
I'm just about positive though that the clock from Ikea is my favoite item in the entire house.

The classic Winnie the Pooh prints came from Etsy, I can't remember the seller.

I'm not one for "themes" in the sense that everything is matchy matchy. I just wanted something classic looking, nothing dated. A lot of the baby bedding these days just turns me off, I can't stand how characters are drawn now, even in children's books.

Some more of Jeremy's project, I kid you not he wouldn't let me come into the nursery until he had his bookshelf set up. I do love what he decided to do with the rabbit and wooden cars though!

Ellie has decided she likes to hide under the baby bed.
This old lady is going to have a come to Jesus moment if she thinks she's pulling that at night and waking him up.

Ole Rocky Joe!
I got this rocking horse when I was about 18 months old from a craft fair. Mom said she wanted a natural stained one, but I refused to get off of the blue horse. There are dozens of pictures of me on this horse, nearly rocking it over at our fishing camp.
I just hope this little boy loves it as much as I do.

My suggestion for a middle name was Thomas, my grandfather's father and brother were both Thomas. His brother being Reuben Thomas.

Reuben actually died when he was 6, I'm not sure of what but Pop recalls him being extremely yellow for about two weeks before he died. These were the toys of his that my grandfather kept, and since I was little and was told about Reuben I have loved that the piggy bank still has the money it in Reuben was collecting. Nothing taken out or added since he died in the early 50's.

I'm a huge antique buff, my great grandfather was a picker and many of the pieces we have came from his shop. So these children's toys, much like all the other pieces in or home have a story behind them. They belonged to real people who we really knew.

I'm just hoping our next child is a girl so I have someone to adore all of our antique pieces with.

So, that's the nursery!
Pretty soon there will be more than a rotten dachshund in there.

37 Weeks

February 25, 2015

Full term. And it's my 29th birthday.
I'd call this a busy week.

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 37 weeks
Size of baby: Baby H is the size of a honey dew melon
Maternity Clothes: All maternity pants and bras, and Piko tops. Plus whatever of Jeremy's that fits. Support belt and compression stockings have become a must... and not a wrist thing for carpel tunnel. It pays to have girlfriends having babies at the same time.
Gender: Boy
Movement: All the time
Cravings: Ice and sweets
What I miss: Sleeping without pain, my skin can stretch no more!
Highlight this week: Not really a highlight, but my blood pressure is still too high. They had me hook up to the monitors for 20 minutes to check to make sure it wasn't bothering the baby and turns out the pain I've been feeling is contractions. Go figure lol!

We celebrated my birthday early yesterday and stopped by Dairy Queen for an ice cream cake. The girl asked if we wanted anything written on it and I said no. Jeremy responded that it was for me anyway. So I told the clerk that if we were to write anything it would be "don't touch this while I'm in the hospital!"

I might hurt someone who tries to come between my and my cake these days lol!

Meal Pinning Monday

February 23, 2015

I'm starting to wonder how many more weeks I will get of this before all goes on a slight hold after baby birthing. Until then, here's the rough estimate of what we are eating. Tonight is actually leftovers, but it was a really good leftover for this chilly weather.

[What is Meal Pinning Monday?]
MPM is how I meal plan for our little family. I once spent a lot of time searching the web and my recipe books hunting for new recipes and ideas for what to cook every week. Then, Pinterest came along and made meal planning much easier for me. Every weekend I look over what I have pinned the prior week and decide what I would like to cook and make my grocery list from these recipes. MPM came about as a way to share what I am cooking, and to also see what others are cooking every week to hopefully get even more dinner ideas from other bloggers. If you don't pin your recipes feel free to just share what you are cooking.

Monday - Lemon Butter Chicken with Brown Rice

Tuesday - My Birthday Dinner, I'm afraid to wait until the weekend in case the baby escapes!

Wednesday - Grilled Chicken with Cheesy Cauliflower Poppers (this is a favorite and I'm afraid of not being able to eat cauliflower while nursing)

Thursday - Paleo Pepperoni Pizza Casserole

Friday - leftovers

Saturday - leftovers

Sunday - eating out?

Breakfast - Greek Yogurt with Granola and Berries
Lunch - Chicken Noodle Soup (with whole wheat noodles)

36 Weeks

February 18, 2015

Well it looks like all the food fun must come to an end and I have to revert back to health nut Emily.

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 36 weeks
Size of baby: Baby H is the size of a large cantaloupe
Maternity Clothes: All maternity pants and bras, and Piko tops. Plus whatever of Jeremy's that fits. Support belt and compression stockings have become a must... and not a wrist thing for carpel tunnel. It pays to have girlfriends having babies at the same time.
Gender: Boy
Movement: All the time, in a slight Alien vs Predator way.
Cravings: Ice and sweets
What I miss: Sleeping without pain, my skin can stretch no more!
Highlight this week: As of today I've dilated from 1 last week and not effaced to 2cm and 50% effaced.

The downside... my blood pressure is up. It was 140/80 after I fought to get my boots off before the nurse weighed me, then I got it back to the 132 like it was last week. Much higher than my normal 120, all of which has led me to have to have my blood drawn today... a 24 hour urine test Sunday... then have my blood drawn again Monday. Luckily there was no protein in my urine today, so hopefully this can be remedied.

Dang this is just so fun.

I started taking Gentle Birth at 35 weeks and have obviously seen some progression, but a side effect a few people mentioned was higher blood pressure. Therefore, I'll be stopping taking it as of this moment and see how that effects my blood pressure next week.

And also daily until next Tuesday, I have to check it daily and log it. More yay.

Obviously I am singing the praises of this stuff, but if it is causing my blood pressure to rise then I'll have to sacrifice early dilation and easier labor for not having to be induced or a section due to ridiculous blood pressure.

So today I'm drinking my kefir (supposed to help with hypertension) and the health nut is reappearing.

Salt, you were fun while you lasted. The fried foods without guilt were great too.
But I don't plan on having this baby early because you taste so good.

Any other Mom's have some tricks to keep your blood pressure down? I've been told to stay off my feet when I'm not at work and to stay off of them as much as possible when I'm there too.

Driven by Guilt, or Competition

February 12, 2015

As a blogger who's friends with a ton of mommy bloggers, I've seen copious posts over the years about guilt and competitive moms.

The other night sparked a conversation between Jeremy and I about just how far is too far when it comes to kid things. When we were children, granted neither of us are from well-to-do families, we had low key birthday parties. Our Valentine's came from the grocery store. My Halloween costumes came from Wal-Mart. We didn't even eat out that often, McDonald's was a serious treat in our house.

Pre-pregnant you notice this stuff. Pregnant... you really notice this stuff.

Do I love Pinterest? Yes. I even post my own projects and recipes to Pinterest, but at no point do I plan on comparing myself to the bloggers on there with crazy coordinated parties that cost an arm and a leg. In all honesty, most of those type of posts were sponsored anyway and the blogger wasn't really that out of pocket on the expenses.

The smoke and mirrors of blogging and super cute everything are sometimes masked with advertising.

So, like my mother always said, don't get your nickers in a knot.

Crazy mom guilt doesn't seem to end with parties. We all are far too aware of the breast feeding sides, natural labor, home school vs public vs private, and everything else on earth there is to make a decision different from someone else. How after how many hundreds, even thousands of years of people living their lives different from others... and dare I say making decisions that are good for their own family... are we still arguing and comparing about these ridiculous things.

Does it really all matter?

It matters to me if I nurse my baby, what school I send him to, and so on down the list. It doesn't matter what someone else does with theirs. That's their business. We should be able to state in conversation where we stand and get support from other women, just because you differ from me doesn't mean I think you're wrong. It just means you are doing something different for your family.

Heck I'd love to be a stay at home mom, but it isn't in the cards for me. Does that mean that going to work is wrong, or staying home is wrong. No, it just means this is where I'm at in my life.

I guess that's why women baffle me when I hear them say that I won't be able to breastfeed simply because they couldn't. Or the parenting style argument comes up. Lord help us all with the parenting style arguments!

I guess in all I just really appreciate that I have a couple close friends who would support any decision I made, within reason, and they know I'd do that same for them. You need to feel as a woman that someone would go to bat for you. Of course your husband will, but there is something about having that support from someone who doesn't really have to support you.

Would I want my girlfriend who wants to breastfeed to stop, no, but if it weren't working for her I wouldn't bash her for it. My place is simply to say "You're a good mom, do what's best for your family."

We are just so far away from being supportive, support these days seems to mean I'll agree with you if you agree with me.

I don't even agree with Jeremy on every single thing, but I support him. There have been a few times in our marriage when something came up that I didn't agree with, but it wasn't something to fight over.

But I digress...

Why do women compete so much, it's as if we are all in some competition that no one actually knows they are participating in. I see ladies all the time trying to one up a birthday party, spend far too much time on some dumb snack for their kids class, or go painfully out of their way to dress their kid in a way that's "Keeping up with the Jones's."

By the way, the people you are competing with rarely know they've been in competition.

So why not, and I'm saying this to myself as well, take a step back and focus on what really matters.

When this baby is a full blown adult he won't be in therapy because some Bob the Builder birthday party had a homemade cake that wasn't that stellar. What he will remember is time spent together, Dad playing with him, hopefully not my incessant nagging, and things we valued.

I remember a year when my mother paid someone to make my cake, it was a beautiful Beauty and the Beast cake at the worst party ever. It was rained out, as per the usual, and we had to play inside. Some parent suggested we tie balloons to our feet and stomp on them. The winner was the last kid with a balloon. Not only did I sit under the table sobbing as my feet were stomped on by little boys... I cried during the entire birthday song. Just like I did every year.

That's just one memory, the vast majority are of Dad playing in the yard with us. Eating ice cream with Pop before Nanny got home because she had him on another diet. And bunnies, we raised bunnies when I was a child.

My parents just wanted me to grow up to be independent and a good person.

In the end, I just want to look at this child and know that he is as Godly of a man as his father is. I want him to treat his future wife well and be a good father.

I want him to look back on life and know that we had his best interests at heart. We did our best to be the best parents we could.

So why on earth do we stress over Valentine's sent to random 3rd graders, or spend tons of money on a birthday party? Do you really put that much stock into those things that your parents did?

Or do you fondly remember feelings you had, and memories made?

Before you stay up all night taping random candies to Valentine's for a group of children who will only rip it off, eat the candy, and chunk that precious thing you made that cost far too much in printer ink... ask yourself what eternal value it has.

Is it making you a better person? Does it make your child love God more?

Or are you just wearing yourself out to keep up with the Pinterest Moms?

I personally like to sleep far too much to keep up with that.

35 Weeks

February 10, 2015

It appears I've become slightly more than awful at blogging aside from meal plans the the weekly bump updates. I just keep telling myself it's a season that will pass.

Then that recipe of Nanny's for beer bread I've been wanting to jump into will happen.

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 35 weeks
Size of baby: Baby H is the size of a bunch of carrots/coconut
Maternity Clothes: All maternity pants and bras, and Piko tops. Plus whatever of Jeremy's that fits. Support belt and compression stockings have become a must... and not a wrist thing for carpel tunnel. It pays to have girlfriends having babies at the same time.
Gender: Boy
Movement: All the time, in a slight Alien vs Predator way.
Cravings: Ice cream, but that isn't really a pregnancy craving. That's called I'm alive aren't I.
What I miss: Coughing without slightly wetting my pants. Over sharing, yes. But let's be real.
Highlight this week: I'm totally caught up on thank you notes, just need to stamp and mail the last batch. We also had our first baby class tonight - Preparing for Childbirth. Tomorrow we will start the weekly appointments and I have a breastfeeding class that night. The nurse mentioned using tennis balls for massage during labor, it might not be safe to have them in the room if Jeremy makes another joke about how she said birth was like running a marathon... and he has in fact run a marathon. He said I should just keep that in mind during labor. He may get a tennis ball embedded into his mind with that nonsense! Ha!

Also, this pregnancy induced carpel tunnel is a beast.

34 Weeks

February 3, 2015

5 weeks left y'all!

Next week I start all my crazy crunchy concoctions that promise to ease the rest of this roller coaster called having a baby. I'll save all that chatter for next week... then we can review it in a month.

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 34 weeks
Size of baby: Baby H is the size of a head of cabbage
Maternity Clothes: All maternity pants and bras, and Piko tops. Plus whatever of Jeremy's that fits. Support belt and compression stockings have become a must... and not a wrist thing for carpel tunnel. It pays to have girlfriends having babies at the same time.
Gender: Boy
Movement: He like to party all night. Jeremy suggested I learn to sleep though it. I'm here to tell you it's impossible to sleep thought someone dragging their feet across your insides and doing what feels like aerobics all night.
Cravings: Frozen Whipped Greek Yogurt. Jeremy accused me of taking his Italian Ice, silly man I only steal Blue Bell.
What I miss: Getting out of bed without an act of Congress to do it. I seriously fell asleep trying to roll over last night. I made it to my back and before I could get to the other side to swing my legs over the bed to go potty I was out cold. At least I didn't wet my pants.
Highlight this week: We got all of our big baby gear - 4 Moms Rockaroo, Graco Click Connect Travel System, Medela Pump, Graco 4Ever car seat... and my splurge the Puj tub:)

After this many years of being married and considering I'm nearly 30 I've adopted the I'm getting what I want attitude with baby things. I imagine I've gotten a few eye rolls, but when you've waited this long and you've been this sick during pregnancy you have to have a little fun. I'm a cheap son of a gun, and made a point to cut corners where I could so I could justify my baby gear.

Plus I swore to Jeremy it would be used to baby #2, which helped to ease his cheap tail along into the notion of what I wanted to get. After this pregnancy I should consider going into sales, if I can convince old stubborn Jeremy I can convince anyone ha!
