A Little Weekly Recap

Friday couldn't here quick enough, home girl needs some down time!

I'm one of those people who get sick if they get too exhausted... this is one of those weeks.


This week was crazy, but fun. Then again the last two weeks have been so busy they've been a blur.

1. We headed out last weekend to Women of Faith Houston. The company was good, and parts of the conference were enjoyable... but overall I wouldn't suggest it as a conference to attend. If you're looking for a women's conference stick to LifeWay, at least from my experience everything they promote is biblically sound.

2. While in Houston I finally got to hit up Ikea. I'll refrain from writing a whole post just about my love for that store. Let me just say this though, what I bought would have cost 3 times that at Target. I was shocked at how cheap it was.

3. We were laughing while heading out of the conference, it was like a sea of women. Or, considering the concrete ramps you are essentially forced down... slightly like cow herding. I felt like I was being pushed through to get shots and branded.

4. This Pizza Bread. If you haven't made it you're missing out.

5. Maddie was always the yoga dog, but I guess in her absence Ellie has taken up the slack. Tuesday when I was working out she practically mauled me trying to get attention. Wednesday she sat in front of me barking and growling. Then, when I was doing this rag doll movement the pup positioned herself so I had to sweep my hands across her in some cheap form of petting. This creature is just a hot mess, at least she didn't drink my coffee while I was doing yoga, which in some sick form of dog obedience training I'd considered her trained. As long as she knows not to touch momma's coffee we're good to go.

I Heart Pinterest Wednesday

Yesterday was a tough day, so there was no better way to end it than with some Pinterest.

Oh dear Pinterest, how you mindlessly make me wish I was cooking and remodeling a house at the same time.


Mom & I made one of these a few years ago, but only one tier, this makes me want to add two more tiers to it. 

I think I need to get my hands on some Vanilla Syrup and make my morning coffee a lot better:)

I made these a few weekends ago and posted them yesterday, they are absolutely divine! 

My friend Stephanie knows how much I love old windows and gave me one a few months back, instead of coving the back in fabric and hanging it in our house (when we buy one, dang no nails townhouse) I am doing this. 

But the questions is... will I still kill it after it grows. I swear I'll have a garden if it kills me. 

My dream home will definitely have a wall of bookshelves... or 4 walls of bookshelves. 

I am a yoga loving fool, and needless to say Travis Eliot says this in one of The Ultimate Yogi DVDs. I would say he says it all the time, but I don't know him... 

Amen. Except today I realized 2004 was 10 years ago. How the heck did I get so old? 

One day at an elementary school and you'll understand how Hitler came to power, someone let him be line leader. Kids will fight to the death and pretend they need to throw something away to get the front... even when they were supposed to be no where near it. 

I'd keep going but I got sucked into the humor tab on Pinterest and managed to find some crazy cats. I hate cats by the way.

My Grandmother's Recipes: Ham & Cheese Spirals

I admit it, I did change this recipe a bit. 

The basics are still all Nanny though. I just swapped out her fridge section biscuit dough and made a little garlic butter to brush on the inside. I also folded them like a Cinnamon Roll for a nicer presentation. 

Yes, even at breakfast I can find a way to add in garlic. These little rolls turned out to be heavenly though.

You may recall awhile ago I made my mother's Ham and Cheese Rolls, those are a family favorite that came about after my cousin Jeanie got married and they were severed as a passed item there. 

This particular recipe though, I dug it deep out of the Nanny's recipe files (and when I say files I mean it, I was handed 5-6 manilla envelopes full of recipes). 

I imagine this is something she made on Saturday's for herself and Pop. When I was around Pop made bacon, grits, fried eggs, and biscuits. So this wasn't something I would have had over at their house. 

One particular summer I was grounded more than I could stand, and as part of my sentencing I was subjected to constant adult supervision. That was also the last time I snuck out, but my sports car loving self couldn't bare passing up the chance to drive someone's car. Even if I was grounded for something like 90 days. 

Why don't I ever just tell people where I'm going? 

Anyway, punishment. Pop was retired by the time that event happened and Nanny was still working, so Laura and I were trucked over to their house every single day that Mom worked summer school. There were perks though, heck I was with Pop. The man makes a mean breakfast, and was well known for harboring Blue Bell ice cream under the guise that it was "for the girls" even when Nanny had put them on another diet. 

So punishment was never really "that" bad with Pop. Plus it gave me a chance to catch up on my Soap Operas, yes I religiously watched those with my grandparents.

My Grandmother's Ham & Cheese Spirals


serves 16
Ingredients::
1 batch of biscuit dough (or store bought)
4 tbsp butter
1/8 tsp garlic salt
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
9 slices Sharp Cheddar (11 oz container in deli section)
6 oz Canadian Bacon

Directions::
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Make biscuits according to directions. Roll out dough like you would for Cinnamon Rolls into a large rectangle, thinner than biscuits, but still a decent thickness. Melt 2 tbsp of butter in a microwave safe dish, stir in garlic and parsley. Brush butter mixture over the rectangle of biscuit dough. Evenly lay slices of cheese and Canadian bacon over dough. Next, roll the dough like you would for Cinnamon Rolls. Now with either a sharp knife or a nice piece of sting cut dough into 16 rolls. Arrange ham and cheese rolls on a pan. Bake for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes remove rolls from the oven. Melt remaining 2 tbsp of butter & brush over the top of the rolls. Place back into the oven and bake for another 5-7 minutes or until golden brown.

My oven runs hot so it could possible take less time after the initial 10 minutes, my oven also apparently hates to brown things.

The cheese I specifically used was the pre-sliced sharp cheddar, the Great Value brand works fine. I would have used all 11 slices except someone ate two of them earlier in the week, such is life.

Meal Pinning Monday #88

Last weekend was a nice little break from cooking, but I'm more than happy to be back in the kitchen this week making all of our meals. I guess I'm not the biggest one for eating out. 

By the way the Pizza Bread from last week was awesome, I ended up using 2 cups whole wheat to 1 1/3 white flour and it wasn't too whole wheat for anyone and too little whole wheat for me.

MPM is how I meal plan for our little family. I once spent a lot of time searching the web and my recipe books hunting for new recipes and ideas for what to cook every week. Then, Pinterest came along and made meal planning much easier for me. Every weekend I look over what I have pinned the prior week and decide what I would like to cook and make my grocery list from these recipes. MPM came about as a way to share what I am cooking, and to also see what others are cooking every week to hopefully get even more dinner ideas from other bloggers. If you don't pin your recipes feel free to just share what you are cooking.

Ingredients - 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1/2 cup strawberry keifer, 1 tbsp chia seeds, large handful of chopped kale, 1/2 cup frozen tropical fruit blend, 1/2 banana

Choosing Memorable Wedding Invitations

I rarely do wedding posts anymore, but when I do they're always on Thursday. 

Just something I've noticed. 

If you've ever bought wedding invitations you definitely know just how much goes into picking out just the right one. It has to match the theme, colors, and heck just make you happy. Today's guest post by Sandie Muncaster will definitely help you out if you are on the purchasing side of invites!

You take the time to pick out the right dress, the right cake, the right venue, so why not also take the time to pick out the very first element of your nuptials that most guests will see? Wedding invitations sometimes come as an afterthought, but they are important and show the preview of your big day. There are several things you need to consider when you want to pick out memorable wedding invitations (and their corresponding response cards), but you’ll do just fine if you use these pointers as a guide:

Set the tone

Invitations can be anything from reserved to over-the-top exclamations of your wedding. There is no “one size fits all” here and, instead, it’s what best fits you and your spouse-to-be and reflects the overall tone of the affair. Many attendees use the fanciness of the lettering, ink and layout to help them identify how to dress, so be careful not to accidentally mislead your guests (especially if you’re providing them with vague directives like “black-tie optional”).

Pick out your colors

There is no design element more powerful than color. Many people like to match their invitations’ palette with that of their actual wedding; while this is a lovely touch, it isn’t necessary. Complimentary hues are advised, but what is important is that the color selection takes on the same personality as your décor. For example, is your English garden venue featuring soft pastels of grays, pinks and baby blues? Don’t contrast this with fiery, bold reds, blacks and oranges that would indicate an edgy, contemporary event.

Select the design

Most people choose an elegant script, but you can really choose any font you like (although be forewarned, bubble letters hardly ever go over well for weddings). You can make your invitations especially unique by choosing multiple fonts (say, one for the actual wedding announcement and another for the wedding details), but try not to use more than two or three to avoid confusion and tackiness. Ribbons can be a nice touch, but keep in mind that fat, shiny ribbons and rhinestones make it look more like a sweet sixteen than a wedding. So, go with thinner and/or lighter ribbons.

Image or no image?

Generally speaking, images are a bit much for even elaborate wedding invitations. You can get away with a simple floral pattern running along the side, but a picture of a big bouquet of flowers takes away from the text, which is really the most important part of the invitation. And if you want to include a photo of you and your fiancé, consider the fact that you may plan on including one on your wedding thank you notes, and even at the wedding itself (table arrangements, sign outside the event hall, etc.) If this is the case, you may want to just choose a simple design for the invitation in lieu of a photo.

Choose a textile

Did you know that your wedding invitations don’t actually have to be on paper? Some people opt to print their invitations on handkerchiefs like these, while another option is having the text embroidered. Either way, it’s best to use a pale, solid fabric so the details of the invitation can easily be read. Another option is to print the invitation on squares of lightweight fabric that can then be backed with paper or even a thin strip of wood. Of course you can utilize the timeless option of paper, and there are plenty of varieties to choose from. Just be sure to go with something that is sturdy enough that it won’t bend easily or flop down when held on one side.

Don’t neglect the envelope

While not as important as the invitation itself, the envelope also should be chosen with care. For one thing, the color should correspond with the design of the invitation. You also have the option of having a custom envelope made that folds out with the invitation and is attached to it or has inner pockets. But whatever you choose, just make sure the envelopes can be clearly addressed and sent through the mail (unless of course you are doing person deliveries). Some people also like including rose petals or a bit of confetti in the envelopes with the cards, but be forewarned that this could annoy a lot of people when it spills out onto their floors.

Say what you want to say

You can say whatever you want in the text of the invitations, but you do need to include the basic necessary information. You and your fiancé’s name, the date of your wedding, the location, and the RSVP date. Other details that are customary to integrate include the dress code, directions and parking tips for the venue and a response card. If the invitation is addressed to only one person, you should be sure to include if they get a “plus one” or not.

Have more than one option

While browsing around for the perfect invitation, there should always be options to select from, especially if you cannot decide at first. Many vendors like David’s Bridal will send you invitation samples before you decide to order. This allows the brides and grooms to physically see the quality of the invitation before placing the order. The dream invitation you see in person or online, may not come out the way you imagined.

Have someone else look over your plans for your wedding invitations before you have them made. There might be wording that, though clear to use, may be confusing to others. It’s best to choose a friend of family members who has preferences not far from your own. Of course, the above are merely suggestions – let your invitations reflect your personality and, above all else, do what makes you happy.

I Heart Pinterest

Oh Wednesday you're hear again.

I sometimes wonder if I'll ever get sick of Pinterest, it's seriously the female version of Google. If I need it, generally it's on Pinterest.


We have a dresser in our living room that we use as a TV stand that I've yet to do anything to. That's how I DIY though, a year later I get Jeremy to do it. I'm mainly holding off until we buy a house, the tables I have refinished have taken a beating in the last two moves. This though, will be perfect for our living room once we buy a house.

I couldn't stop laughing when I say this, it's 100% me. I love talking wedding planning, but oh the horror of engagements when you're in college. I wish I could look this girl in the face and tell her just you wait until the baby season hits! Hilarious!

A favorite pair of pants is currently suffering from this problem and I'm very tempted to try this. 

Do I need this? No. Do I want this? Yes.

I made these for Valentine's Day instead of breaking out the work that goes with legit Pomme Frites, it didn't disappoint. Absolutely perfect fries, and way healthier.

DIY garland? Okay! With Jeremy's graduation sneaking up I am slowly planning his graduation party. He doesn't really care to do anything, but after 3 years of this I feel like I almost deserve a cake that says "Congrats Emily! You moved twice, really didn't want to, but knew you had to support your man... and didn't kill him yet."

My old ugly stools need a makeover, this will definitely be happening... but after we move.

Teachers, this works! I started it a few weeks ago to get the attention of the day dreamers with nonverbal queues. My day dreamers now know how to day dream in a way that makes me (and anyone observing) think they are working. That'll help with that "are they engaged" ranking on Compass evaluations. Needless to say they also don't like holes in their papers... or explaining to their parents why it looks like their desk had large termites. Now if I can just devise a way to keep this on my body so I can hold punch seamlessly.

Black Pepper Marinaded Roast

This particular recipe isn't my grandmother's own, but one she really loved.

What I'm giving you today is an adapted version of it, the original calls for brisket, and we all know how expensive that can be. Plus with just two people at our house there is no real reason to break out a 10lb hunk of meat. We'd be eating it for weeks.

This recipe made it's way into our family soon after my wedding. The chef/plantation owner who did our wedding is amazing, and her recipes and just all around Southern way of doing things is something I so admire her for.

One of the particular recipes everyone at our wedding was in love with was the beef brisket, which she has the recipe for in her cookbook. Right around the time of the wedding she released her cookbook, so Mom bought copies for herself, Nanny, and I and had Regina sign all of them. Many of the recipes she had at our wedding are in that book, and I'll cherish them and her sweet note for years to come.

Nanny started making the brisket for family get togethers not long after we got our hands on that cookbook, then again we've made several of Regina's recipes since then.

The actual recipe for the beef brisket is to die for, but like I said... there are only two of us. So there's no reason to break out a small cow.

With my wallet and family size in mind I adapted this wonderful recipe to fit us, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Black Pepper Marinaded Roast via @labride

Black Pepper Marinaded Roast

adapted from Regina's Table
Ingredients::
1 large clove of minced garlic
1 tsp dried basil
1 tbsp cracked black pepper
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
2-5 lb beef or pork roast (ours was about 2 lbs)
1 cup of water
salt & pepper to taste

Directions::
In a sauce pan melt butter, add olive oil Worcestershire Sauce. Add in garlic, basil, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes. Place roast in a crock-pot and pour in 1 cup of water. Season roast lightly with pepper and salt. Pour marinade over the roast and cover. Set to low heat and allow to cook for 8-10 hours.

The water is mainly to keep the roast from burning, be sure your water doesn't cover the roast but simply is there to keep everything moist. Otherwise it will burn. 

Even with the water in the crock-pot the roast will still get a great crust from the pepper marinade. That was definitely something I was afraid I would lose doing this in the crock-pot, but it turned out perfect.

I've wanted to make these two recipes forever, especially since I rarely make pasta anymore and rarely eat bread. Sunday's are always so crazy so Saturday night I just had to get Jeremy to agree that I could cook and we wouldn't go out. Y'all I'm not kidding you when I say I've been dying to make the Hot Tomato Oil since I saw it on Food Network. 


Monday - Sausage, Sweet Potatoes, Bell Pepper, and Onion Skillet. (no recipe just tossing it together. 

Tuesday - Buffalo Chicken Lettuce Wraps

I'll probably split this recipe in half and make a white flour version for Jeremy and a whole wheat one for me. He isn't a fan of the texture of homemade whole wheat bread. I did white flour Sunday... so that's all the white I can take for one week:)

Breakfast  - Green Smoothie 
(1 c almond milk, 1/2 c Keifer, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 c frozen tropical fruit blend, 1/2 banana)

Lunch - Hummus, Feta, & Spinach on Lavash with Carrot & Cucumber Sticks
I haven't made my hummus recipe since Jeremy and I were engaged (the man doesn't like hummus) and I've got a massive hankering for it. If I get it just right I may post it... but like I said it's been almost 5 years.

High Five for Friday

Oh this week couldn't end fast enough, and for a change I wasn't envying the snow day in north LA. The last thing we need are added school days ha! 


1. I've picked up doing Ultimate Yogi again, call it my "oh crap I'm getting old yearly thing." In case you were wondering, yes I am getting old. In a little over a week we are edging just a tid bit closer to 30. Ellie on the other hand feels that I need more toys while doing yoga, she happily shared her cow with me the other day.

2. The African Children's Choir came to our church and performed Sunday night. They were great, but I couldn't get over Jeremy's reaction to them the entire concert. I could totally see him wanting to go back to Africa the whole time. The first year we were dating he actually went to Africa for 3 weeks on a mission trip with the ULM BCM. While it would be hard to get me to go somewhere that requires shots, after hearing his stories I would have gone in a heart beat. Needless to say if you ever see me post that we are dropping everything to be overseas missionaries don't be surprised ha! I could totally see Jeremy doing it.

3. Jeremy went running the other day and Ellie sat on the couch waiting on him to come back. Only one issue, I've never seen her sit with her legs like this. Have we hit the lazy old doggie stage?

4. Cookie dough. I am determined to get it perfect. The flavor was spot on, but I cooked it at too low of a temp, which too it too long to cook, hence they didn't spread out right. Tonight I'm making more and getting it right this time!

5. Last year Jeremy surprised me by getting us both new bibles, the ESV study bible by the way, and wrote the sweetest note in mine. I'm the type who has to have a bible cover, I'm a hoarder and this is the only way I don't lose things. Well a few months, or maybe more, I found a hot pink canvas case that was actually large enough to fit my massive bible... well I finally got it monogramed like I planned to do. I started to do a black monogram because of the zipper and tag on the cover, but the girls at the monogram place convinced me to go teal. Gotta say I love it! I was afraid it would be too much, but it works. Not exactly the font I wanted, but the one I was going for wasn't an option.

Paleo Chocolate

I'm a chocolate person, I also like to eat clean the majority of the time. 

Those two don't tend to go together, especially if you look at what's in a Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate bar. 

Last week weekend I decided to tackle the issue and make something that soothed my chocolate craving without the junk or guilt. 


My favorite thing about this recipe is that it is easily doubled and tripled. You can add any nut/dried fruit combo, or even fill them if you'd like. 

It's completely open for change as long as you know what you're craving. 

This particular time I wanted almonds and cranberries, my favorite nut and dried fruit combo. The first time I made them I used almonds, raisins, and apricot. 


Paleo Chocolate

make 12 mini muffin cups or 6 regular size
Ingredients::
1/4 cup natural cocoa powder
1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
1/4 cup raw honey

Directions::
Combine melted coconut oil, cocoa powder, and honey in a bowl. Divide evenly between 12 mini muffin cups, or 6 regular size muffin cups. Top with fruit and nuts, or fill with almond butter. Chill in the refrigerator until firm. 


Nutritional Information:: (serves 6) calories 153g, carbs 16g, fat 11g, protein 1g, sugar 13g, fiber 2g (serves 12) calories 76g, carbs 8g, fat 5g, protein .5g, sugar 6g, fiber 1g

I Heart Pinterest - Valentine Gift Ideas

With it being V-Day week let's talk gift ideas, whether they be bought or made, they're all coming from Pinterest. 



First up, men, you can't go wrong with a good monogramed planner. It isn't so far into the year that it's not doable.





This name may make you giggle, so let's get it out of the way quick. Balls of Steel.

Have you heard of them?

For my own personal ice hating self this is a great concept, steel marbles that serve the purpose of cooling your drink without the watery issue. They are marketed for drinks like whiskey, but I think they would be great for anything. Lemonade? Yes. Water? Yes. Is it liquid? Then let's not make it watery with ice.

I've professed my love for this lid, if you have a mason jar addict in your life this would make them just plain giddy. Especially if they are in the canning part of mason jar hoarding and just have tons laying around.





This is a personal favorite. You can buy them at most florists now, but why do it when you can make it for less!





Finally, a tried and true gift that's always a winner, a love note. I would much rather have some good quality time and a nice note any day of the week. Even men love words of affirmation. Plus it's nice to come across these old notes years later when you aren't having the best day.

Suave Professionals® Moroccan Infusion Body Care Review & Sweepstakes


When I was asked to try out the new Suave Professionals Body Care line, I knew of all the products I could review I'd be giving this one a true test.

Y'all know I live with the motto that expensive isn't always better; I think the never-ending years of graduate school have made me believe that. Suave had always been affordable and Jeremy and I have used their hair care products for as long as I can remember (I know I used their shampoo as a kid). As far as their body line goes, I have stuck only to their unscented lotions.

My skin just can't take much perfume, I immediately feel like someone set me on fire.

The lotion I use after shaving my legs is the most important, I'm so sensitive to scent that I vividly remember being in maybe 7th grade and using a popular scented brand of lotion after shaving. We were out shopping and within the hour I was itching more than I ever have before, my skin was burning, and I was begging to be taken home so I could shower the horrible stuff off. With that being said, I was incredibly eager to give the new Suave Professionals® Moroccan Infusion Body Care the leg lotion test. If I could stand to use it after shaving my legs and I didn't have to feel the fire ant burn from the scent, or lack of moisture, it was going to be my new favorite.


How did it fair? 

Well it passed the test with flying colors. 

Suave Professionals® Moroccan Infusion Body Lotion and Dry Oil actually have an amazing scent -- they smell so good that I put it on at night and after working out the next morning, I still smelled good. This says a lot considering how bad I need a bath after a workout. 

I was really excited to try the Dry Oil. It wasn't that long ago that I received a sample of a high-end expensive brand of Dry Oil and really did love it. Suave didn't disappoint, I can honestly say I'm not even going to purchase the expensive stuff, from now on I'll stick to this! 

Just a hint, it feels amazing after a hot shower when your pores are open and can soak in the amazing oil.
